If sun, pizza, and a long, golden stretch of sand sound like your kind of thing, then you'll settle in rather well at Marina di Rossano Club. This caravan site is in Rossano on the high Ionian coast of Calabria in Italy, just off a strip of sandy beaches and five minutes’ drive from a beachside line of bars and restaurants serving mimosas, pizzas, and pretty much every other holiday essential you can think of. Back at base, there's a wealth of amenities, including a bar and shop as well as bathrooms with toilets and unlimited hot water. There's plenty of shade around to chill out in, and you can fill up after a long day out at the restaurant or pizzeria, or stop by the on-site bar for a lovely cool mimosa. Alternatively, it's five minutes’ drive to a long line of bars and restaurants right on the beach, where you can watch the sun kiss the sea goodnight as it sets. Once you’ve had your fill of the sea and the sand, head back to the on-site pool, which is flanked by palm trees and sun loungers – just the spot to dig into a good book while the kids make a splash. In fact kids are likely to be scrambling from one on-site entertainment to the next, with five-a-side football pitch, basketball, and tennis courts to bring out their competitive side, and a playground and amphitheatre too.

Local attractions

Run amok down the sandy beaches of La Playa del Re and Falò Beach (each a 10-minute drive), or head further down the coast to Sibari (25 minutes), where there’s temptation in all directions – treetop adventure courses, sandy lidos, or archaeological ancient ruins are just some of the offerings. Away from the beach, it’s time to invigorate the mind too. The Ducal Castle of Corigliano (20 minutes) will take you back to a time of battles and barricades, while the Museo della Liquirizia (five minutes) – a real treat for those with a sweet tooth – will reveal there’s more to liquorice than its tangy taste. Take a nibble while you’re there, because you’ll need the energy to race the family down the slides at AcquaPark Odissea 2000 (15 minutes). Don't forget to save some battery for I Giganti del Cozzo del Pesco (35 minutes) too, where you'll feel like an ant among the towering centuries-old trees along the trails.
