Tucked away on the outskirts of Afytos, an ancient village built of stone on western Greece’s Kassandra peninsula, Afytos Barbara House is a small, simple site covering 634 square metres. It’s gifted with spectacular views over the glittering Aegean Sea – and indeed you can be down on sandy Athytos beach within 10 minutes’ walk.
Facilities for guests include a swimming pool (cleaned daily) and sun deck, a well-equipped communal kitchen with fridge, cooker and microwave, a chill-out zone with tables and sofas, and up-cycled outdoor furniture at picnic spots around the grounds. There are also basic loos and an outdoor shower.
If you’ve left something vital behind at home, don’t fret as you can hire bed linen, towels and pillows from the site owners. You can stock up on provisions in Afytos supermarkets (15 minutes’ walk away), or eat well in the local tavernas – and if you want to explore the region but don’t have transport, there are car- and motorbike-hire companies in the village too.

Local attractions
If it’s the beach life for you, then frankly you’re spoiled. Athytos beach (10 minutes’ walk) is your nearest bet, and there are numerous free beaches within 20 minutes’ drive. Backed by craggy rocks, there are clear waters and quiet sandy stretches at Varkes and Vothonas (both 10 minutes’ drive), and you can rent sun beds at Kriopigi (15 minutes).
On the west coast of the peninsula, Possidi Cape (half an hour) has sugar-white sands and no crowds. You can combine your day at this beach with a visit to the Poseidon Temple Archaeological Site (25 minutes), where the colonnades of an ancient Greek temple overlook the sea.
If you’d like to learn more about Greek culture, Kalithea (five minutes) is home to the Sanctuary of Ammon Zeus, a compact site that’s free to explore and is scattered with ancient columns and statuary. There are also delicate mosaics to see at the Early Christian Church of Solina (10 minutes), which are kept undercover for protection from the sun.
