General

  • Lush site in the grounds of a hotel, near medieval Kastellaun
  • Surrounded by hiking/biking trails; within easy reach of two rivers
  • Greek restaurant, gym, bike hire and Boeing 737 flight simulator

What a pretty spot. And what a spectacularly nifty setting: within easy reach of a motorway, making you handily placed for stopovers between Belgium, the Netherlands and the rest of Central Europe, this Rhein-Hunsrück site of Burgstadt Camping Park is less than a kilometre’s walk too from the centre of the highly handsome medieval centre of Kastellaun. And, even more handily, right next door is a hotel with a Greek restaurant and beer garden for afternoon and evening feasts and tipples plus – get this – a Boeing 737 flight simulator for non-flying types.

There’s reams to explore in the region during days off site: for starters, the area’s dense network of hiking and cycling trails are a splendid way to get out and see the local countryside, along sections of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig or the BurgStadt-Pfad walking trails, or Kastellaun’s Schinderhannes cycle path for pedal-powered explores.

For something slightly different, fans of lofty sights should make a trip to Germany's longest-reaching cable car, in Geierlay, top of their list. Also splendidly, winter dog sledging tours led by huskies are available over in Bell, four kilometres from base, as are trips to see fierce Siberian tigers alongside furry and feathered farmyard creatures at the village’s animal park. If you’re after something a little more adventurous, an excursions operator in Kastellaun organises activities and days away around the region too.

Burgstadt Camping Park is peaceful and cosy nook set in the grounds of the BurgStadt Hotel in Kastellaun; the friendly owner Heiko has set the site most splendidly among a laid-back landscaped and terraced park, and to keep things nice and relaxed, there’s no entertainment here – just plenty of lush greenery to roam among (or a gym to take things up a notch), and bikes to hire should you fancy getting out to explore the many cycle paths that crisscross the locale.

On site at the pitches, guests will find themselves with freshwater taps, an electricity outlet and chemical disposal points; also at your disposal is a sanitary block with toilets and hot showers, as well as a laundry room for keeping all your holiday garb in order. Also handily, free wifi is available.

Very quiet. Lovely Greek restaurant at the hotel.

Great as a stopover for a couple of nights - not sure if there is that much to do for an extended stay - though could be wrong!

Close to motorway - we were en route from Austria to Amsterdam.

Local attractions

As you’re a short walk into the medieval fortified village of Kastellaun, perhaps your first jaunt off site should be an amble around its plentiful winding alleys and stops among its little shops – if you’re feeling particularly generous, you might even find occasion to pick up a souvenir or two around the town. For when an ample appetite has been worked up, several good restaurants and inns are around too should you fancy tucking into regional tidbits or quaffing top-notch German brews.

As you might expect around here, the relaxed vibe at Burgstadt Camping Park extends out to the locale too: piles of hiking and cycling options are around, with countryside tramps along sections of the 410-kilometre Saar-Hunsrück-Steig hiking trail, or the BurgStadt-Pfad path both nearby; if you’d rather sightsee from the saddle, you can hire a bike on site and pedal at your leisure from Kastellaun along the Schinderhannes route, or to the nearby Moselle and the Rhine riverbanks.

Over in Bell, a short drive or pedal from base, there’s a big animal park that – alongside lots of lovely furry and feathery farmyard beasties – houses several Siberian tigers; take the kids to peek at feeding time and see other critters like ostriches, eagles and sheep, or if you’re visiting in the winter months, dog sledding tours with the park’s huskies is a topping option here. Also in the area is a high ropes course for lovers of adventures at lofty heights, and Germany’s longest cable car route over in Geierlay for highly scenic drifts over the lands below.
