  • Near the hiking trails of the Bleckhausen Juniper Conservation Area
  • Roomy pitches surrounded by orchards and mature trees
  • Outdoor pool and waterslide, playground and barbecue area

A hikers’ paradise, this site’s setting is among the viewsome volcanic lakes and dormant volcanoes of Vulkaneifel which, in terms of people, is one of Germany’s least densely populated, and in terms of walking trails, is one of Germany’s most densely networked.

… And as spa seekers will know, a land filled with volcanoes can only mean one thing: it abounds with bubbling thermal springs, historic spa towns and castles in addition, of course, to tons and tons of scenic hiking and cycling trails for all abilities proffered by landscapes made up of wooded slopes, lakes, foothills and protected reserves.

The site is an easy peasy kilometre from the mighty handsome spa village of Manderscheid, and surrounded by lots of highly scenic trails for pedal tours and promenades, such as the famed Eifelsteig trail and the Vulkanbike Trailpark, both of which pass right through Manderscheid.

Back at base, there’s a lot to be getting on with too. It’s fably green and lies on a south-facing slope directly next to a forest, with grounds that are dotted by lots of mature fruit trees and hedges. In fact, leaf lovers, only a third of the property is dedicated to accommodation, leaving the other two thirds for leisurely pursuits.

A fine big pool is where grownups and littlies might well end up spending most of their leisure time, as there’s plenty of space and sunbeds and sunbrellas for good long poolside lolls, as well as a waterslide for kids to squeal down.

Out of the pool, more larking about can be done around the site’s spacious playground or, should they wish to stretch out even further, around the park itself (hide and seek, perhaps?), for there’s oodles of grassy space around too. For something distinctly more ball-based, several options are available over at the multisports field, where guests of all ages and sporting persuasions can play the likes of ping pong, volleyball, badminton, basketball and football.

Local attractions

A short drive away are the side-by-side castle ruins of Manderscheid, where the local museum tells the story of the area’s medieval past; the upper castle of Oberburg is free to visit and there’s a small fee to take a look around lower Niederburg, and there’s a fair bit of walking to do, so be sure to bring a good pair of walking shoes along with you. If you’re after something rather more sedate to do in the area, also in Manderscheid are several volcanic spa resorts for properly relaxing pampering and wellness treatments.

The area around Manderscheid too is known very well indeed for the abundance of hiking and cycling trails among smashingly scenic volcanic mountains and lakes, like the Mosenberg volcanoes, the Meerfelder Maar craters and the Wacholdergelände bei Bleckhausen (aka the Bleckhausen Juniper Conservation Area).

For an urbanised day further afield, the cities of Koblenz and Triers are both around an hour’s road trip away. The gateway to the terraced vineyards and ruined castles of the Rhine Gorge, Koblenz is a splendid spot for sampling local German wines and ambling around among historic monuments like the statue of William the Great or the neo-Gothic Stolzenfels Castle, all to be finished off cable car rides to the hilltop fort of Ehrenbreitstein.
