  • Restaurant serving local beef and organic produce sourced nearby
Prepare to be busy: Munster's Campingplatz zum Oertzewinkel has a monster amount of things to do on site and all around. This pretty place is set by the River Oertze and right in the middle of the wide expanse of Lüneburg Heath with a forest play area nearby – and close to adventure parks, wildlife parks and days out pony trekking, fishing, horse riding and canoeing in the surrounding countryside. The reception staff here will happily help guests arrange active days out in the area – just let them know what you want to do – and can also hire out bikes and go karts for a small additional fee. Table tennis and a football pitch are also available on site, along with several play areas to keep the kids entertained/tuckered out, and a TV room for lazy indoor days. And as you'll need fully fuelled for all that, how fortuitous that there's an on-site inn too, dishing up local beef alongside organic and locally sourced fish, meat, fruit, veg and game. Buy local honey, sausages, eggs, potatoes and venison in the site shop, which also sells basic groceries, ice cream, coffee and fresh bread and rolls every morning.

Local attractions

As stated, prepare to be busy… after a hike, kart or cycle around the area, several other Lower Saxony attractions are within easy reach of Campingplatz zum Oertzewinkel. The Müden wildlife park and the Serengeti-Hodenhagen wildlife park are both in the area around Campingplatz zum Oertzewinkel: Müden along the banks of the Oertze and Serengeti at Hodenhagen. Müden has over 200 wild animals in their natural habitats for you and your little critters to see up close (there's also an insect hotel), and Serengeti has thousands of animals in four zones as well as over 40 fairground rides. The biggest amusement park in north Germany is at the Heide Park Resort in Soltau; after a morning here, wind things down at bit among the Soltau Toy Museum's many exhibits covering four centuries of play. For something a touch more educational, there are excellent kid-friendly exhibits galore at the East Prussia Regional Museum (45 minutes' drive), covering everything from the landscapes to the stories of the area's World War II refugees. You could also get (more) active at the giant Ralf Schumacher Kartcenter go-karting circuit or at the climbing of Arena Reinsehlen – or get trainspotty at Hamburg's Miniatur Wunderland, the biggest model railway exhibition in the world.
