General

  • Welcoming campsite with wine tasting on site
  • Private pool, waterslide, daily activities, sports and theme nights
  • In the Beaujolais wine area and 30 minutes' drive from Lyon

If a campsite is in the Beaujolais wine area, what a corking idea it is to offer tasting of its vinos right on site.

This is what cleverly happens at Camping Les Portes du Beaujolais in Anse, where Valerie and her knowledgeable team have added a selection of local wines for tasting to the comfy and welcoming reception area. (You should of course later venture into the French countryside to find more local brews of your very own.)

Other options to while away the hours at Camping Les Portes du Beaujolais are splashing around in the private pool with waterslide/in the swimming lake, or getting stuck into one of the many sporting activities like football, volleyball, table tennis or pétanque; kids have a paddling pool, indoor playroom and outdoor playground. Creative and sports activities are run by staff daily in July and August and theme evenings and other events by night.

The site also has a snack-restaurant and sells essentials like fresh bread, groceries and local produce in its shop. The swimming lake is available for fishing too, with more angling locally at the Saône and Azergues rivers.

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. Pitches were very level and spacious. Plenty of facilities.

    Disliked:

Noise. The site is very close to a busy road and train line. It is a massive site. No soap at any sinks for washing hands after toilets. Sinks provided for dishes are in the toilet and shower block area so people wash their hands after using toilet where you are washing your dishes. The pool area is rammed all day. No free wifi.

Fantastic lake, warm and clean within 5 minte drive or 20 min walk of site

    Disliked:

Booked electic pitch but none left by the time we arrived at 7pm. More frustrating was the fact the staff do not keep track of arrivals/ departures so told us there was a place, which we spent 20 mins looking for before abandoning the search and doing without electric for the night: moving places next morning. So organisation poor for no reason as far as we could see

We stopped at the site as the location was a good break from a drive between Port Grimaud & Calais.

    Disliked:

During a downpour (which cant be helped) the rain poured through the roof of the covered dining area. Water was flowing over lights and other electrical connections.

Friendly, professional staff and excellent level pitch 26/09/2016

Reviewer's country: France John W. Confirmed

  • Liked:

Very friendly and professional staff in the office to welcome us.
Pitch was flat and electricity was between us and the next-door pitch.
The sanitary facilities were clean and well equipped - even had toilet paper! - but no wash-hand basins in the gents urinals.
Nice setting alongside a tributary of the Soane, with a pretty walk either into the town of Anse, or to a (recommended) restaurant on the Soane. We went to this restaurant, which was expensive, but the food was superb.
Very pretty site, lots of pitches to choose from.

    Disliked:

No wash-hand basins in the men's urinals (which also had a clear glass wall on to the outside world. No soap in the (single) basin in the men's toilets.
Motorcyclists who left noisily at 6:00am (not the fault of the site, of course).

Wi-fi is good but expensive (5€ a day)

Don't know how long it is going to last, but road works prevented access to what seems to be the usual way into the site. The alternative way involved negotiating a rail-bridge which is marked as having a 2.5m headroom - scary in a motorhome that's 2.75m high. In fact the bridge has more than enough headroom through the centre of the arch.

Local attractions

As we might have mentioned, Camping Les Portes du Beaujolais is in the Beaujolais wine area, between the south of Burgundy and the north of the Côtes du Rhone and best known for its Le Beaujolais Nouveau. Ten vineyards are on the Beaujolais wine route to visit, spread between Mâcon and Lyon adjoining the hills of the Beaujolais; take time to see the area's Middle Ages châteaux like the Château de Montmelas too.

The UNESCO World Heritage City of Lyon is 30 minutes' drive away and has days' worth of old buildings to see, including the hilltop Roman amphitheatre and the Fourvière church.

This is a foodie city too and probably the best known gastronomy centres in France, with many bouchon restaurants serving Lyonnaise cuisine like roast pork, duck pâté and sausages.
