From freshwater fishing to spotting pelicans, storks and macaws in the local bird park… a 40-minute drive from Lyon, Camping Le Nid du Parc is well situated for fans of fishing and beady-eyed birdwatchers. It's 15 minutes’ walk away from the Bird Park Villars les Dombes and surrounded by the so-called ‘land of a thousand ponds’ in the Dombes region in Ain. Hire out a bicycle or stretch your legs around the surrounding ponds; once you’re done, there are plenty of spots to put up your feet around the site. Perhaps you might wind up in the on-site bar or restaurant… or if you’re still brimming with energy, there’s an outdoor swimming pool on-hand for a few laps. Got the whole family gathered together for the getaway? Well, kids will have plenty to get stuck into, as there’s a playground with slides and climbing frames, and the site runs entertainment for both the young and old. Once you’ve had your fill of the activities on site, it’s a 10-minute walk into the centre of Villars-les-Dombes. This little village has its own sights, including an 11th-century Romanesque church, plenty of ponds and wildlife in the form of ducks, raptors, herons and frogs. From here, those on foot can follow the Pierre Poivre footpath and those on a bicycle can career onto the Route des Etangs to see the rest of the region (perhaps go on horseback, if you want to feel like you’re really conquering the land).

Liked Camping calme et convivial. Emplacements spacieux et très bien entretenu. Sanitaires et communs propres. Membre du staff tout service confondu très sympathique. Le prêt de matériel pour les diverses animations,jeux,livres est très bien pensé. Très chouette séjour.

Disliked Peut être rajouter une lumière le soir au bord de la piscine pour les baigneurs tardifs jusque 22h

Liked The cabin/tent was spacious, well equipped and private. The site is very quiet. Facilities are clean. The pool was lovely. The site is quiet.

Disliked The shared sex toilets were a little off putting- English guests are not used to open urinals in ladies toilets. That said, they were kept very clean.

Schöne Stellplätze und ruhige Anlage.
Nettes Personal!

Disliked Nachts haben sich besoffene Engländer geprügelt und die Polizei war vor Ort.
Aber für das Verhalten einzelner Gäste kann der Campingplatz ja nichts...
Wir kommen trotzdem wieder....

2 bedroom gypsy caravan

Liked Caravan was clean, omfy, and great use of space for 2 adults and 2 children. It had everything we needed for a couple of nights stay. Helpful and friendly staff at reception where you could order croissants, and baguette for the next morning. These were delicious! You could get into Lyon from the train station in the town which was a short walk away.

Liked A large site with lots of well thought out tiny private pitches, beautifully screened by abundant greenery. Well kept but natural looking. Spotless facilities, friendly staff. Food at the cafe basic but adequate and cheerfully served. Some of it home made - very good ratatouille and lovely chocolate mousse. A very quiet site and a great reintroduction to me to French camping - which I don’t think I’ve done since the 80s!

Disliked I would have preferred that they didn’t use single-use plastic to serve their desserts and morning fruit salad.

Local attractions

If you’re looking to get to grips with the history of the Dombes region, Ars-sur-Formans (20 minutes' drive) is a good place to start. This is a place of pilgrimage, once home to Saint Curé d’Ars and now the site of the grand Sanctuary of Ars (Basilica of Ars). For more historical outings, Ambérieux-en-Dombes (10 minutes) has a 14th-century castle, while in Pérouges (15 minutes), the ancient fortified town is best explored by its alleyways, maze or through the taste of its sugar pies. While away the time with some wine tasting, too… if you fancy yourself somewhat of a wine critic, the Val de Saône region has the vast wine-growing landscape of Beaujolais (35 minutes). Dip down into its wine cellars, then visit stone villages such as Trévoux (25 minutes) or try out the farm food specialities of Bresse (20 minutes). Worth the extra miles, foodies may also want to pay a visit to Bugey (an hour and 10 minutes) for its food, history and wines. Perhaps pair it with a trip to Lyon (35 minutes).
