Time for some luxurious rural R&R? The small assortment of glamping retreats at Gîtes du Moulin should do the trick… found five minutes’ drive from red-roofed Saint-André-en-Royans deep in Isère countryside, they’re all stylishly kitted out with unusual design touches and a boho vibe. If you’re keen to up your sustainability cred on your country break, these cool and unusual units are set amid woodland on a micro-farm with a seasonal market garden and chickens and ducks producing eggs, while goats and horses graze the land holistically and provide manure. Rainwater is collected to irrigate the crops, hedges and shrubs are planted to encourage wildlife: snakes, frogs, toads and birds of prey are all around if you know where to look… At the end of a busy day’s exploring, this is a place for romantic dining alfresco on your private terrace with a backdrop of starry skies. If you’re keen to get cooking, buy eggs, seasonal vegetables and salad greens produced on the farm – from field straight to plate – and if you’d rather have someone else to the hard graft, order meals directly from the owners, who live right next door if you run into any problems when on site. What else is provided? All bed linens but not towels. A sauna (by reservation and carrying a small charge), and private parking near the units.

Local attractions

Keen walkers, grab your sturdy boots and jump on the hiking trail right from the farm for forays up to the Vercors Massif (90 minutes’ walk). Depending on the time of your stay, you can ski in winter or summer hike in the Parc Naturel Régional du Vercors (direct from the site), where it’s also possible to go deep underground and see where Ice Age man once lived in Thaïs Cave (15 minutes’ drive). When it’s historic buildings you’re keen to visit, meander down to the 12th-century château in Saint-André-en-Royans (20 minutes’ walk), stop off for a drink in the square with views across the Vercors foothills and – suitably refreshed – carry on your walk along the Bourne River to Pont-en-Royans (an hour and 10 minutes) to admire the colourful hanging houses clinging to the cliffside. There’s more Isère heritage to be discovered at ancient Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye (25 minutes’ drive), where cobbled streets packed with half-timbered old houses lead to an abbey church bristling with flying buttresses – a popular stop on the famed Santiago de Compostela pilgrim route into Spain.
