Camping Le Lanfonnet: Lac Annecy, at campsite

General

  • Peaceful family site on Lake Annecy, surrounded by mountains
  • Windsurfing, paragliding, hang gliding and canyoning all nearby
  • Direct access to a public beach with waterski, kayak and pedalo rental

Ooh la la, the lakeside setting of Camping Le Lanfonnet is most magnifique. And this is not just any old lake – non, Lake Annecy is a veritable gem. The third largest in France, its clear waters are fed in by mountain streams to make up one of Europe’s cleanest lakes.

Clearly, one must allow plenty of time for watery and waterside hours and hours, but there’s loads more to fill your days around here. A beach is a couple of minutes’ amble away from the site and two more lie within a 20-minute walk, for sunbathing days, canoeing, paddleboarding, scuba diving and heaps more.

The site is well set up for activities too, with table tennis, table football, pétanque and a playground, as well as a TV room to retreat to for indoor times, and a bar-restaurant to fully investigate for local grub.

Pick up essentials at the site grocery store in summer; at other times and for more shops, take a 20-minute stroll along the lakeside path to reach local village Talloires. A miniature golf course and tennis courts are up here too, and it’s the starting point for some great hiking and bike trails up into the hills. Restaurants and cafés are in the village and all along the lake shore for essential coffee and croissant pitstops or for a glass of vin with a view.

The proximity to Lake Annecy. Minutes walk to the lake. Shady, grassy areas where you can access the lake. Can take dogs to lake.

    Disliked:

The campsite. Cram as many people in as possible and charge a fortune. The pitch we were on over looked a carpark. Lots of dust. People from the carpark could drive onto the campsite and just parked up in pitches. Had to walk through carpark to get to toilets/showers. People staying in carpark overnight just used the facilities for free. Facilities were clean but very very old fashioned. Toilets ok. Showers tiny. Had to pull a chain for water. Let go of chain, water stopped.

The location was perfect. Access to the lake, cycle hire and close to many bars and restaurants. The cycle lanes are right outside the site and lead around the perimeter of the lake - 43km of tarmacked, flat paths. Gorgeous!
The young girls and boys who work on the site spoke English and were friendly . The site shop stocked fresh bread in the morning and a small selection of fruit.

    Disliked:

The electric pitches are undesignated, so there is little room and you need a long lead to get to electric points. The electric is only 3 amp so cuts out often. We recommend putting your roll-out awning up to ensure nobody parks alongside you when you're out.
The facilities are few, but in good condition in the first and second block.
    No wifi at all

Literally nothing else! What a joke! Traffic forced us to arrive after the agreed time so emailed ahead to relay this. Response was that this was ok and no problem. Arrived, told to follow the campsite map round to a pitch that didn’t exist and had no electric hook up! There was no room for our motor home pre paid and booked three weeks earlier!?? We were definitely not the only ones this happened to!!! Ended up staying in the car park attached to the site for two nights.

Local attractions

Several hiking and cycling trails around the lake start from Talloires village – a popular route from here is the hour-long walk up to the Cascade d’Angon waterfall. To get to other walks in the area, such as those in the Bout du Lac natural reserve, take the car (20 minutes to the nature reserve) or pick up the bus or boat services running all around the lake.

On the hillside above the village is the medieval Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard, where you can take a guided tour of some of its 100 rooms; pick from a traditional guided tour or one run by costumed actors to help fire up the kids’ imaginations. It’ll take you 15 minutes or so to drive up there or just over an hour to hike up.

Watersports galore make the most of the gorgeous lake waters – just next to the site are waterskiing, wakeboarding and windsurfing lessons and canoes and sailing boats for hire, and up in Talloires are a paddleboarding school and a scuba diving centre. If you’d like to combine your watery pursuits and mountain exploration, sign up for a canyoning trip from the adventure sports centre a couple of minutes’ walk from the site.

Adrenaline junkies with an eye for a great view can fly over the lake on a paragliding flight from just outside Talloires; meanwhile, those of a gentler persuasion might prefer a round of golf at Lake Annecy Golf Course, 10 minutes away.

The handsome old town of Annecy is half an hour's drive away.
