Peaceful rural times in the pretty Var region, with a popular seaside resort a short drive away for those times when you want a bit more activity – that’s the setup at Camping Les Lauriers Roses, a relaxed place 10 minutes’ drive from buzzing Fréjus. This is a most scenic setting, with views towards the Mediterranean and the Estérel mountains from a site that’s packed with cork oaks and umbrella pines. That scenery continues beyond the site’s boundaries, and it’s easy to get out to explore some of it: plenty of hiking trails and bike paths pass close by, heading either up towards the plains and mountains or away to the coast (and the nearest beach, which is about 10 minutes away by bike). Bikes can be hired on site for such jaunts to make life easy. If you’re looking to head further afield, a handy bus stop is a very short walk away; those seeking to stay close to base, meanwhile, can pick up supplies at the supermarket a couple of minutes’ walk away or avail themselves of the site’s bakery service. That time spent around the site isn’t likely to be wasted – there’s plenty to do around the place between the outdoor fitness area, playground, pétanque court, TV room, library and games including table tennis, table football, volleyball and billiards. It’s also worth scheduling some time for the heated outdoor pool and paddling pool – they’re flanked by a sun terrace and bar/restaurant with terrace for eats and drinks while watching pool proceedings (a particularly fine place to be during the happy hour that’s held several times a week).

Liked: La vicinanza al mare (15 min in bici) e la presenza di un supermercato Carrefour appena fuori dal camping.

Disliked: Al nostro arrivo alle 20:30 (con orario massimo di arrivo alle 21, quindi eravamo in tempo) abbiamo trovato il cancello chiuso, e l’unico cartello presente era in Olandese. Siamo in Francia, già mi raccapezzo con il francese, ma l’olandese?! La piazzola è costata tantissimo ed era molto risicata, non c’era tanta privacy. Il giorno dopo abbiamo chiesto, come segnalato nel sito, delle bici da noleggio. La proprietaria ci ha dato un volantino dicendo che 200m a destra avremmo trovato il posto che le noleggiava. Usciamo sotto al sole cocente, camminiamo per oltre 1 km e troviamo giusto un posto che le noleggia elettriche e al doppio dei prezzi segnalati. Un po’ per principio abbiamo deciso di cercare quelle del volantino. Guardo sulle indicazioni e dobbiamo camminare 2 km in un’altra direzione. Conclusione? Alla fine abbiamo chiamato il numero del posto e ce le ha portate direttamente nel camping. Abbiamo perso 1 ora e più di tempo con un caldo che non vi dico. Tutto questo per dire che la proprietaria gentile e tutto ma non aveva idea di quello che stava dicendo, ci ha dato indicazioni per niente attendibili. Avrei preferito la sincerità, cioè che non sapeva con esattezza.

Liked: Relaxed atmosphere. Small site. Tiered pitches. Welcomed by regular returnees. Great position for bus (€1.50 to Frejus), supermarket and boulangerie. A range of beaches a mile or so away. Friendly. Not over commercialised. Semi rural. Don’t be put off by the entrance and lane into the camp, lined by caravans in storage, as the site is hugely better than the initial impression may give.

Disliked: Expensive restaurant. Needs a snack bar during the day. Water in showers needs to be a little more consistent heat wise.

Liked: Good swimming pool ample beds and sun shade,Restaurant not bad had the ribs very good, but bar not open until 5.00pm.Good sized pitch for 7.3m Motorhome

Disliked: The showers could do with a deep clean and some general maintenance though water was hot.Service facilities for motor homes not even there so no were to empty waste from tank except on the pitch. Elson for emptying toilet broken so had to walk to other side of site to empty toilet. The site in general could do with some maintenance .

Local attractions

These are excellent surrounds for spending some time out in the open, so make the most of that by taking a wander around Étangs de Villepey nature reserve (20 minutes’ walk), or getting in the car for five minutes to access horse riding, a golf course or canoe/kayak outings. And you’ll quite possibly be after some beach time too? Esclamandes beach is the closest at five minutes’ drive/10 minutes’ bike ride – there’s at least a kilometre of sand here, with dog-friendly and naturist sections plus kitesurfing and other watersports. Further watery times might take you out on scuba diving adventures or swooshing down the slides of Aqualand Fréjus; both are about 10 minutes’ drive away. Fréjus (10 minutes’ drive) is famed as a beach resort, but there’s plenty more to it than simply sands (as fine as these are…). Head over here to feel all cultural wandering around the archaeology museum, cathedral and Roman theatre, or take a short trip out of town to meet the various beasts at the zoo (15 minutes from the site).

Booking terms and conditions

Admission

All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.
Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.

Changes to your holiday

Changes cannot be made once you have booked.

Dogs

Dogs are not allowed if you are staying in the accommodation units.
Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.
Guide dogs are allowed on site free of charge.

Hired accommodation

Hired accommodation: €200.00 (£170.70) damage/cleanliness/bracelet deposit is required on arrival and will be refunded on departure after inspection of your unit should no damage/losses be found.
Your unit must be left clean and tidy; a fine of €60.00 (£51.21) will be charged for unclean units upon departure.

Occupancy

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.
No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Pitches

You must follow the management directives when pitching your tent/unit and related equipment.

Pool

Only park guests are authorised to use the pool.
Swimsuits are obligatory and swimming shorts or Bermuda shorts are not permitted.
The outdoor swimming pool is open between 25/05 and 12/10 (subject to weather conditions).

Reception

Reception is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. between 29/04 - 30/06 and 27/08 - 09/10.
Reception is open from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. between 01/07 and 26/08.
Reception is unmanned after 6:30 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.
