Embarking on trips to the seaside is a cinch from Camping La Barque – it’s a very easy 10-minute drive to the beach from this friendly Var site on the banks of the Argens river in the outskirts of Fréjus. Don’t fancy getting the car full of sand on a beach outing? Take the alternative route by hiring a kayak or paddleboard on site and splashing your way there along the river, or bring/rent bikes to pedal along the traffic-free riverside paths in 20 minutes or so. Other places you might like to bike or drive to nearby including a go-karting track, waterpark, amusement park and scuba diving centre. And if your holiday brain simply tells you that it’s all just too far away, give in to those thoughts and stick around on site for swims in the heated outdoor pool (or reclining on a sun lounger with a cool drink from the poolside bar while the tiddlers mess about in the paddling pool) or to join in with the sports tournaments, aqua gym classes and kids’ activities that run here throughout the summer. There’s no need to move from where you’re at for food, either – the site’s restaurant has plenty of eats on offer, including veggie options, and a fine menu of entertainment in summer too (live music, karaoke, theme meals and the like…)

Local attractions

You’ll want to spend a bit of time on the beach in Fréjus (10 minutes’ drive), of course, but it’s also worth allocating some hours to wandering through the town, taking in its 12th-century cathedral, its candy-coloured houses and its perhaps unlikely Chinese pagoda. And it’s also worth saving some time for the area’s other beaches… Esclamandes beach, the closest to the site (10 minutes) is a real crowd-pleaser, with family areas, dog-friendly corners, a naturist area and kitesurfing for the active sorts. Sandy San Peïre (15 minutes) and the wartime landing beach of Le Dramont (25 minutes) are other options – or you could get your finest kit on and head over to the swanky resorts of Saint Tropez and Cannes with a drive of an hour or so. Steering away from the sea for a bit, outings might include the zoo just outside Fréjus (15 minutes), the waterslides of Aqualand Fréjus (10 minutes) or evenings checking out all the rides – for kids and grownups alike – at Luna Park (10 minutes).
