Camping La Vallée Heureuse: Campsite located on the right of the photo

General

  • Spacious family site near Orgon in the Alpilles Regional Natural Park
  • Within an hour's drive of Marseille, Avignon and Aix-en-Provence
  • Outdoor pool on site and swimming lake a short walk away

In a place called the Happy Valley, and accessed via the Sunshine Motorway… that’s got to be a combo that raises a smile.

Camping La Vallée Heureuse is a pleasingly spacious nine-hectare family-oriented site five minutes’ drive from Orgon and a similarly short hop from the afore-mentioned A7 motorway (handy news for those seeking a convenient stopover when heading north or south).

Don’t plan to move on too quickly though, for there’s much to detain you around these parts for a little while. Just a couple of minutes’ walk away is a lake for walks and watersports, and the Durance river runs nearby too. You’re in the scenic surrounds of the Alpilles Regional Natural Park for outdoorsy pursuits, with Avignon, Marseille and Aix-en-Provence all less than an hour away for time in town.

Time on site is well spent, too – have a swim at the outdoor pool, play pétanque or table tennis or snaffle a shaded spot from which to gaze out over the gorgeous views. A pizzeria, bread order service and a bar with ice cream provide plenty of bits to snack on, and there’s a programme of activities and entertainment for all ages in the summer months.

Woodland style of the campsite, the staff are friendly and helpful, laidback is the general consensus. The site is tucked away in the valley with Red Squirrels and lots of birds, good size pitch and pretty flat. All in all a lovely campsite.

    Disliked:

Showers are either too cold at the first block or seriously scalding hot at the second block so that you can't stand in it or you will be burned.

Noisy - we stayed over a weekend where there were 20-30 people booked into the same mobile hime section. First night loud music until 2.30am. They started off in the site bar but I assume carried on back at their camping area. Spoke to staff re matters the following day and they were sympathetic to situation and said it would not be a problem again. It turn out the the group had an off site function on the Saturday night and ended up returning to the site on foot after the event in drubs and drabs again being noisy in a jovial way up until 3am. The next night again some drum and base music being played loud until late I was unable to locate where this was originating from.
Following night was a lot quieter and showed what a great site this can be. Suggest don’t accept booking from such large groups in future.

This is the second year in a row that my wife and I and our young son (3 years old) have stayed here. The campsite is nestled in a narrow valley beside a small swimmable lake with just enough trees to provide the right amount of shade without obstructing a view of the stars at night. The onsite pool is heated, and there's a bouncy castle for children. What more could a small family ask for? A schedule of all the local outdoor street markets, perhaps? Well, they have that, too. Are you looking to mix in a little high-culture as well? Avignon, with it's castle, is a short drive away. But for us, the main attraction is the Carrieres de Lumieres museum. A literal cave, built into the side of a mountain, we have gone three years straight--a tradition that we hope continues for many years to come. And now that we've found the Happy valley campsite, we know where we're going to stay next year and the year after that and the year after that.

We arrived to receive a very kind and warm welcome …22/09/2020

We arrived to receive a very kind and warm welcome from the site's husband/wife team. Unfortunately for them, the site was extremely quiet due to the restrictions and quarantine regulations newly imposed on several countries from Covid, but this didn't affect us as instead it made the site so quiet by being virtually deserted! It's a simple wooded site with most pitches of a decent size, offering good shade. The pool was still open, (we didn't use it this time) but there were no other facilities available at the time. There was only one toilet block open which was kept clean, however the actual building outside was a bit tired and needed some TLC. My husband seemed to have hot water coming through on his side, but for some reason the ladies side only managed a faint tepid! The showers also operated on a sensor system rather than the usual ' timer push tap' so this took a bit of getting used to too. Luckily as the weather was so hot, it was ok, but could have been a problem otherwise! We used the site as a base to be able to visit the region including Avignon and Nimes - both interesting towns and worth the drive.

    Disliked:

We had to leave earlier than planned, (only stayed 3 days) as unfortunately their internet connection was virtually non-existent, and our own portable dongle couldn't work there either. We enquired about the paid option, but it was too expensive for our liking. The site is set within a small valley with some quite steep rocky cliffs all around - so offering very striking scenery, but clearly caused the problem for any wifi connection. If you're going on holiday to escape all of that you'll be fine, but my husband had to do some work, so it became impossible for us to stay!

Local attractions

The surrounds of the Alpilles Regional Natural Park have much to explore – walks, bike rides and horseback treks are popular ways to take in the rocky vistas, vineyards and olive groves. For some completely different (but equally scenic) walks and activities, drive for 45 minutes or so to the wetlands of the Camargue Regional Natural Park.

Delve into the region’s past with visits to some of its historic sites: the riverside medieval fortess Château de Tarascon and the Bronze Age village of bories in Gordes are both around 40 minutes away by car, and the Saint Paul de Mausole monastery (where Vincent Van Gogh painted some of his most famed works) is around 20 minutes away.

Should you fancy wandering around town for a while, it’ll take you around half an hour to reach Avignon for museums, UNESCO-listed sites and excellent wine cellars (Châteauneuf-du-Pape is nearby, for starters). Marseille and Aix-en-Provence are both less than an hour away by car.
