Swimming pool

General

  • Spacious family site near Orgon in the Alpilles Regional Natural Park
  • Within an hour's drive of Marseille, Avignon and Aix-en-Provence
  • Outdoor pool on site and swimming lake a short walk away

In a place called the Happy Valley, and accessed via the Sunshine Motorway… that’s got to be a combo that raises a smile.

Camping La Vallée Heureuse is a pleasingly spacious nine-hectare family-oriented site five minutes’ drive from Orgon, and a similarly short hop from the aforementioned A7 motorway (handy news for those seeking a convenient stopover when heading north or south).

Don’t plan to move on too quickly though, for there’s much to detain you around these parts for a little while: just a couple of minutes’ walk away is a lake for walks and watersports, and the Durance river runs nearby too. The site is in the scenic surrounds of the Alpilles Regional Natural Park for outdoorsy pursuits, with Avignon, Marseille and Aix-en-Provence all less than an hour away for time in town.

Time on site is well spent too – have a swim at the outdoor pool, play pétanque or table tennis or snaffle a shaded spot from which to gaze out over the gorgeous views. A pizzeria, bread order service and a bar with ice cream provide plenty of bits to snack on, and there’s a programme of activities and entertainment for all ages in the summer months.

The large private pitches and that you got chose where you pitched. The views are fantastic with walks all around. We loved a walk around the lake followed by a stop off at the bar on the lake watching wakeboarding. The food we ate in the on site restaurant was good and reasonably priced.
Facilities were all good and the toilets kept clean.
    Staff friendly

    Disliked:

The restaurant wasn’t open on Mondays (which was the day we arrived) and only served pizzas except for Wednesday which was a bbq, due to the remoteness of the site they need to offer a bigger variety of food. Another improvement would be to offer snacks on a lunchtime.

Absolutely loved the stunning scenery, the superb location from which to explore the region. The very friendly and helpful staff. All the facilities were clean. A family weekly wifi package at an affordable price was great.

    Disliked:

The only slight disadvantage in this campsite is the rocky ground (hard to get half our tent pegs in) and we were perched on a slope up a steep hill but there were other flatter, larger pitches which if we hadn't arrived so tired we may have tried to negotiate. Some of the evening entertainments went on until 11.45pm (karaoke, band) several nights, not the earlier 10.30pm quiet curfew advertised!

This was one of the best sites we have ever stayed in. The setting is beautiful- in a rocky valley surrounded by huge granite cliffs. The swimming pool and restaurant were both great. We liked the fact that our pitch was high up away from anyone else so we were not overlooked. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful. Washing machines were available, along with a place to freeze ice packs. There were several good walks straight from the campsite. There is a nice lake just outside the campsite for swimming and cable waterskiing.

    Disliked:

Loud music coming from the restaurant on two nights (after 10pm). One was a special event so this is understandable, but the other was just an ordinary Friday evening.

From the manager...

Directions

Local attractions

The surrounds of the Alpilles Regional Natural Park have much to explore – walks, bike rides and horseback treks are popular ways to take in the rocky vistas, vineyards and olive groves. For some completely different (but equally scenic) walks and activities, drive for 45 minutes or so to the wetlands of the Camargue Regional Natural Park.

Delve into the region’s past with visits to some of its historic sites: the riverside medieval fortess Château de Tarascon and the Bronze Age village of bories in Gordes are both around 40 minutes away by car, and the Saint Paul de Mausole monastery (where Vincent Van Gogh painted some of his most famed works) is around 20 minutes away.

Should you fancy wandering around town for a while, it’ll take you around half an hour to reach Avignon for museums, UNESCO-listed sites and excellent wine cellars (Châteauneuf-du-Pape is nearby, for starters). Marseille and Aix-en-Provence are both less than an hour away by car.
