  • Dog-friendly site four kilometres from the centre of Aix-en-Provence
  • A 25-minute drive to Montagne Sainte-Victoire; 40 minutes to Marseille
  • Part of 10-hectare grounds with local products for sale
The first step to crafting your Aix-en-Provence getaway? Start by snatching up a spot at Camping Chantecler, which is just four kilometres away from the city centre. Once you’re all set up, with the dog and any kids comfy too, all that’s left is to get exploring… To the city of art, first of all? As the birthplace of the painter Paul Cézanne, your first pitstop might be Musée Granet (five minutes’ drive), which houses works by him and others including Picasso. Stroll the old part of Aix, down its typical alleyways and past hole-in-the-wall restaurants, or along the chic Cours Mirabeau. An opera festival takes place every summer in the city too. For a change from city scenery, Montagne Sainte-Victoire is only 25 minutes’ drive from Camping Chantecler if you fancy a climb to the top. It's a peaceful green place to spend a few hours wandering – and so is the campsite itself. It has a large swimming pool in the high season, plus wifi and local products for sale, along with 10 hectares of space in which to relax. Views of the Sainte-Victoire mountain are all around to look at while you chill out, but the site is also well based for getting active out in the open air. You might like to take a walk in the countryside that inspired Cézanne, or stop in at local vineyards for a wine tasting or two; they’re within around 10 minutes’ drive of the site.

Local attractions

Looking for your first adventure outside of Aix-en-Provence? The lush lavender fields of Valensole (55 minutes’ drive) are a very worthy contender, not to mention a top photography spot. Just as lush are the historic villages of the Luberon, like Ansouis (35 minutes), surrounded by vineyards, or pretty Bonnieux (an hour) and Cucuron (40 minutes). Back in Aix-en-Provence, one splendid museum is Fondation Vasarely (10 minutes). It’s not about the famed Cézanne but rather about the 20th-century French artist Victor Vasarely. A lesser-known spot is Cézanne's studio (10 minutes), which arranges cultural and foodie events. There’s another big city within reach too, the marvellous Marseille (40 minutes), which has a whole host of historical sites. If, however, the lively streets aren’t to your liking, take off on foot over the Cassis creeks, which run from Marseille to Cassis (40 minutes) and have limestone cliffs, crags for climbers and hiking paths.

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked: Quiet Walking distance to city center Friendly staff at reception Good size of pitches

Disliked: Although working well, electric hookups not to modern standards. Could do with more proper drinking water points throughout the campsite Waste bins overflowing and very smelly Graywater disposant point old and dirty and water point there not very hyginic looking Some pitches are very uneven and tight to get into for modern campervans Site could do with modernisation

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked: The location is a great base for exploring the area and the buses into the city are just outside the campsite.

Disliked: The customer service was appalling. We booked on pitch up giving an eta of 10pm as this was the latest advertised. We arrived at 9pm to find the reception in the dark and closed and had to keep knocking when the only staff member there was ready to leave to go home and got annoyed with us saying , we are closed, we close at 8. This was contrary to the advertised time on pitch up and presumably pitch up would send them details of our booking, so they should have been expecting us. After a time of dealing with annoyed staff member, who seemed like he was not going to let us in at first, we explained that we had paid in advance in full and arrived within the advertised times and we were eventually let in when showing our booking confirmation. We were shown to our pitch but didn’t know where any of the services were and it was very dark, so had a hard time finding water and waste services. The staff member left after this and had we had turned up five minutes later there would have been no one there and we would have been stranded with our caravan and no where to stay as the site is barriered, We did not use much of the facilities as we went the following day, but the toilet and shower facilities were dated and not the cleanest. The pitches were not level or well maintained. After this experience, we will never book here again.

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked: Reasonable option to visit Aix, city centre 45 minutes walk or close to local bus service Trees and hedges for shade (in hills at the edge of the town) Sanitaires had plenty of hot water and were very clean

Disliked: Felt a bit run down at the end the season (lights in showers, door handle fell off in my hand, a few showers not working …) Be warned many pitches aren’t level and turns and gradients on the site are steep - fine for us at 6m but likely to be problematic for large outfits
