  • Scenic and family-friendly site on a riverbank in the Luberon
  • Verdon Regional Natural Park and L’Occitane HQ within 20-minute drive
  • Two pools, slides, hot tub, bar-restaurant, miniature golf, small shop
Six hectares of peaceful woods, a small river meandering through (don’t forget your rod) and, with luck, that Haute-Provence sun beating down… Bliss, non? Say ‘oui’ then step this way, and make it snappy – Camping L’Eau Vive, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the village of Dauphin, could give you life. On the banks of the river Laye and deep in Luberon Regional Natural Park, the site’s well placed for outdoor excursions: as well as the nearly 2,000 kilometres of hiking and biking trails in Luberon (bike rental on site), it’s just 20 minutes from Verdon Natural Regional Park where there are even more paths to wander down, as well as opportunities for climbing, hang gliding and canyoning. If that all sounds too strenuous for the hols, settle in on site for a somewhat more laidback affair. Take to the multisports field for some footie (or whatever else appeals), try it on a smaller scale with table football, play a round or two of miniature golf, then cool off by splashing around in one of the two pools (there are slides during high season) or spend some time unwinding in the hot tub. Even if the family’s staying put, that doesn’t mean appetites have to match (there are no calories on holidays) – there’s a small shop on site for sorting essentials, mornings are taken care of with the bread and pastry service, and a snack bar and restaurant are on site for more filling fare.

Local attractions

Stays at Camping L’Eau Vive simply have to start with a trip into Dauphin, five minutes’ drive from the site. The medieval hilltop village is full of pretty winding streets and there are free guided tours and hikes every week – an obvious must. Dauphin is far from the only scenic spot hereabouts either: the similarly hilly village of Mane (check out the botanical gardens at the Salagon Priory) is also about five minutes away, and Forcalquier and Volx – and their markets and lavender fields – are both within 15 minutes. There are some big names within easy reach too… For anyone who goes weak at the knees for dramatic scenery, make steady tracks to the spectacular Verdon Gorge (an hour and a quarter), with a pitstop at Lac du Sainte-Croix along the way for beaches, boating and swimming. If natural beauty is generating that glow, head instead to the headquarters of L’Occitane, 20 minutes away in Manosque. In need of an urban day? The city of Aix-en-Provence – its museums, artist studios, mansions and fountains (so many fountains) – is an hour away and, if longer car journeys aren’t an issue, the stunning Marseille is just 15 minutes further.
