General

  • Southern France wildlife haven next to a natural lake and a river
  • Among the green hills of Provence 30km from the Gorges du Verdon
  • Pool, guided hikes, restaurant, snack bar and loads of room to play

How very clever. Predict a watery time all around at Camping La Célestine among the gorgeous green hills of Haute-Provence… not content with just a site swimming pool, the canny owners have created a lush 750m² natural pond for swimming, paddling and floating lazily on one's back gazing dreamily up at the passing clouds.

The 74-kilometre Asse river, a popular paddling and playing spot for tiddlers, weaves peacefully along one side of the site too; if your watery tastes tend more towards observing from a safe distance, a beach with sun loungers is at the edge of the pond for lazy afternoons avec book et possibly cocktail. And if your tastes are veering towards the more solitary, you'll be able to find several secluded spots to sink down in around these pretty and colourful grounds.

This is lovely land, in the middle of the Provençal hills, at the foot of the Valensole plateau and its huge, world-famed, lavender fields. Hiking trails of all levels run from the entrance of the site, to the splendid lavender fields, olive groves and truffle oaks all around; ask the friendly team for its knowledgeable recommendations on the best trails, join a guided hiking tour from the site, or leaf through the many brochures in reception to plan your own wandering day.

A couple of pétanque courts and a playground are at your and the kids' service too, along with a football field, a volleyball court and ping pong tables. To refuel, there's a restaurant open every summer evening, and a snack bar serving drinks, ice cream and crepes.

Please note

Group bookings of 10 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/07 and 30/08 (subject to weather conditions).

Local attractions

The site's Provence hill setting is among hiking trails for all levels of ability, through varied landscapes including lavender fields, olive groves and truffle oaks. The famed Valensole plateau nearby has vast fields of the lavender for which the Provence region is famed: wander around its landscape in July to see the area at its most spectacular.

Within easy driving distance are the Gorges du Verdon about 30 kilometres away, for canyoning, canoeing or peaceful wanders among its beaut setting; Sainte Croix lake close to the gorges for swimming and sailing; Digne-les-Bains, the spa town surrounded by lavender fields and mountains, and the citadel of Sisteron, high against the sky above the Durance valley.

Energetic options nearby include rafting, canyoning, pedal boating and canoeing along the Verdon and on the lakes of Esparron, St. Croix, Quinson and Castillon. Closer to home, the nearby village has a treetop adventure centre, bike trail, equestrian centre and a paragliding base.
