General

  • Friendly island site with direct access to the beach
  • Heated pools, waterslides, Jacuzzi area and paddling pool
  • Playground, sports court and restaurant specialising in shellfish

Oh, the isle of Oléron… the land that's the biggest island off the French Atlantic coast, with a mild climate, beaming sunshine and over 80 kilometres of coastline along with stretch after stretch of long white sandy beach… see just how many of them you can get around in one trip.

Going west on the isle? Have a stay at friendly and traditional Camping Le Suroit to be in a natural park with direct access to an Oléron beach surrounded by dunes, and in a place filled with things to do on site – along with spacious pitches and loads of room all around. The island is connected to the mainland by a three-kilometre toll-free road; if you want to leave the campervan/motorhome behind, you could always hire the Camping Le Suroit Renault Zoe electric car…

Among the many facilities on the site are a heated outdoor pool with waterslides, open from April to September and in an area surrounded by Mediterranean rocks for finding just the right spot to sunbathe. There's also a heated covered pool with a Jacuzzi area, a paddling pool with mini slides and water games for kids, a playground, a sports court and table tennis.

The team arranges activities like aqua gym and swimming lessons for all sizes in July and August, alongside the likes of sandcastle comps, sports tournaments, French classes, treasure hunts and pétanque tournaments, and family entertainment including music, dancing and bingo in the evenings.

And then there's the restaurant… Le Coq is open from April until the end of September, run by a knowledgeable chef who's always happy to give guests tips on what to order; there's a fishy theme here, so try the shellfish, paella, couscous, choucroute de la mer and quite a bit more. Meals are available in the brasserie, on the terrace or via takeaway for those who'd rather eat by their pitch.

Friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, evening entertainment, meals in the restaurant, easy access to beach, park was clean, children loved the water slides and pool.

    Disliked:

Electric supply was easily tripped (couldn't use an electric kettle) and Pool and hot tub were too cold for me to use, but apart from that wonderful stay.

Good facilities, good sized pitch, popular with families, handy shop on site and nice swimming pool. Showers and lops were surprising clean given how busy the site was. The beach was a couple of minutes easy walk from the site and we enjoyed supper on the beach as the sun went down on a few nights.

    Disliked:

Not bringing our bikes! The island is great for walking and cycling (and you can hire bikes) but not so great for driving a Motorhome. Also ban on BBQs following a fire on another campsite so not able to enjoy cooking seafood and relaxing outside as we would have liked to have done.

Cleanliness of the facilities. The pool was the reason we booked and it didn't disappoint our 3 and 6 year old boys. The restaurant food was very nice. Camp activities were plentiful but not offensive. The band stopped playing at 11.

The staff spoke excellent English and didn't laugh at my poor attempts at French! The electric hook up had a French socket and we had arrived late, but the friendly barman lent us one as the price had shut.

The pitch was a nice size and surrounded by trees, definitely didn't feel on top of other campers.

We loved it hear, it's not walking distance to a town, but we made the 5km on bike with the little ones. It made a nice cycle ride.

I would go again ... We were very sad to leave. Thanks for a memorable stay suroit.

    Disliked:

As another review said the direct access beach is a natural beach, but it was quite, sandy, and a beautiful sunset. So not a dislike but a warning if you are expecting a tourist beach. I wouldn't have swam there because I'm a scaredy cat when it comes to seaweed.

The food in the restaurant was delicious. It was band night and very busy so we had a bit of a wait, and had to sit inside which was a bit in the stuffy side.

They placed us in Mars, an area near the pool to accommodate our very excited children. In future I'd request to be nearer the beach access and away from the hustle and bustle.

Local attractions

Oléron really is rather outstanding… one could bask on its beaches or wander its coast path for quite a few hols on the trot, without deigning to investigate anything else.

But of course one should investigate elsewhere, for there's rather a lot to see aside from the sands here too. The Camping Le Suroit team recommends some time at the nearby Chassiron Lighthouse, to see its museum then stagger up the 224 steps for views over the island's east coast, Fort Boyard and the Île de Ré.

One should also get to the La Cotinière, the old fishing port on Oléron's west coast, and to the island markets at Domino, Saint-Denis d'Oléron, La Brée les Bains and several other spots. The island's oyster farming fields and cycling through the Port des Salines salt marshes are other activities highly recommended, along with a family day out at Mickey's Club in Sables Vigniers.
