  • Heated pools, waterslides, Jacuzzi area and paddling pool
  • Playground, sports court and restaurant specialising in shellfish
Oh, the isle of Oléron… the land that's the biggest island off the French Atlantic coast, with a mild climate, beaming sunshine and over 80 kilometres of coastline along with stretch after stretch of long white sandy beach… see just how many of them you can get around in one trip. Going west on the isle? Have a stay at friendly and traditional Camping Le Suroit to be in a natural park with direct access to an Oléron beach surrounded by dunes, and in a place filled with things to do on site – along with spacious pitches and loads of room all around. The island is connected to the mainland by a three-kilometre toll-free road; if you want to leave the campervan/motorhome behind, you could always hire the Camping Le Suroit Renault Zoe electric car… Among the many facilities on the site are a heated outdoor pool with waterslides, open from April to September and in an area surrounded by Mediterranean rocks for finding just the right spot to sunbathe. There's also a heated covered pool with a Jacuzzi area, a paddling pool with mini slides and water games for kids, a playground, a sports court and table tennis. The team arranges activities like aqua gym and swimming lessons for all sizes in July and August, alongside the likes of sandcastle comps, sports tournaments, French classes, treasure hunts and pétanque tournaments, and family entertainment including music, dancing and bingo in the evenings. And then there's the restaurant… Le Coq is open from April until the end of September, run by a knowledgeable chef who's always happy to give guests tips on what to order; there's a fishy theme here, so try the shellfish, paella, couscous, choucroute de la mer and quite a bit more. Meals are available in the brasserie, on the terrace or via takeaway for those who'd rather eat by their pitch.

What customers say

This campsite benefits from a superb location near the beach and cycle paths, with many guests praising the swimming pool and private bathrooms. Pitches are described as spacious and shaded. However, several reviews highlight issues with dated and poorly maintained sanitary facilities, including a lack of hot water and electricity. Some visitors also found the site overcrowded and noted that WiFi is an additional charge per device.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked The best thing was the pool and the access to the beach.

Disliked We could not use the whole pitch because we had to leave room for vehicles to access the pitch behind. Everything was very cramped, toilets were dark and full of mosquitos. Rarely got hot water for washing up. Not near any shops/attractions, need a car/bikes to get to shops etc.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Lovely campsite on the banks of lake Anncey. Access to the lake and a small beach directly, with two bars and restaurants. Lots of shaded pitches. Bus stop straight outside to Anncey (40mins).

Disliked Could do with a little more in the shop as there’s nowhere else near, without getting in the car.

Electric grass pitch (deluxe, private bathroom amenities)

Liked Wonderful place and would highly recommend. Clean, tidy and deluxe cabin on the pitch was well worth the extra. Staff are really friendly and happy to help. Pool area and slides are perfect areas to relax without it being too big and noisy- at times it could be difficult to find a seat but this is to be expected during busy periods and when very hot. Beach is a perfect short walk and sunsets are beautiful.

Electric grass pitch (deluxe, private bathroom amenities)

Liked chose the deluxe with your own bathroom and has a sink, fridge. Direct beach access was excellent, my son spent hours rock pooling when the tide is out.

Disliked Food was expensive in the bar and restaurant did not have some of the food on menu. The supermarket is miles away, not walking distance. Direct beach access was very good. Wifi is not free.

Local attractions

Oléron really is rather outstanding… one could bask on its beaches or wander its coast path for quite a few hols on the trot, without deigning to investigate anything else. But of course one should investigate elsewhere, for there's rather a lot to see aside from the sands here too. The Camping Le Suroit team recommends some time at the nearby Chassiron Lighthouse, to see its museum then stagger up the 224 steps for views over the island's east coast, Fort Boyard and the Île de Ré. One should also get to the La Cotinière, the old fishing port on Oléron's west coast, and to the island markets at Domino, Saint-Denis d'Oléron, La Brée les Bains and several other spots. The island's oyster farming fields and cycling through the Port des Salines salt marshes are other activities highly recommended, along with a family day out at Mickey's Club in Sables Vigniers.
