Oh, the isle of Oléron… the land that's the biggest island off the French Atlantic coast, with a mild climate, beaming sunshine and over 80 kilometres of coastline along with stretch after stretch of long white sandy beach… see just how many of them you can get around in one trip.
Going west on the isle? Have a stay at friendly and traditional Camping Le Suroit to be in a natural park with direct access to an Oléron beach surrounded by dunes, and in a place filled with things to do on site – along with spacious pitches and loads of room all around. The island is connected to the mainland by a three-kilometre toll-free road; if you want to leave the campervan/motorhome behind, you could always hire the Camping Le Suroit Renault Zoe electric car…
Among the many facilities on the site are a heated outdoor pool with waterslides, open from April to September and in an area surrounded by Mediterranean rocks for finding just the right spot to sunbathe. There's also a heated covered pool with a Jacuzzi area, a paddling pool with mini slides and water games for kids, a playground, a sports court and table tennis.
The team arranges activities like aqua gym and swimming lessons for all sizes in July and August, alongside the likes of sandcastle comps, sports tournaments, French classes, treasure hunts and pétanque tournaments, and family entertainment including music, dancing and bingo in the evenings.
And then there's the restaurant… Le Coq is open from April until the end of September, run by a knowledgeable chef who's always happy to give guests tips on what to order; there's a fishy theme here, so try the shellfish, paella, couscous, choucroute de la mer and quite a bit more. Meals are available in the brasserie, on the terrace or via takeaway for those who'd rather eat by their pitch.

Local attractions
Oléron really is rather outstanding… one could bask on its beaches or wander its coast path for quite a few hols on the trot, without deigning to investigate anything else.
But of course one should investigate elsewhere, for there's rather a lot to see aside from the sands here too. The Camping Le Suroit team recommends some time at the nearby Chassiron Lighthouse, to see its museum then stagger up the 224 steps for views over the island's east coast, Fort Boyard and the Île de Ré.
One should also get to the La Cotinière, the old fishing port on Oléron's west coast, and to the island markets at Domino, Saint-Denis d'Oléron, La Brée les Bains and several other spots. The island's oyster farming fields and cycling through the Port des Salines salt marshes are other activities highly recommended, along with a family day out at Mickey's Club in Sables Vigniers.
