  • Peaceful rural site with stunning views in the Charente-Maritime
  • A 20-minute drive to Jonzac; 10 minutes to the Galope Chopine Greenway
  • Swimming pool on site; access to hiking and biking on quiet roads
What could be more typical of the French countryside than a stay surrounded by vineyards and sunflower fields? And that’s what you’ll get at Bellevues Glamping and Camping, a peaceful rural spot in the Charente-Maritime – one of the sunniest regions of south-west France – with several acres of private grounds to explore (bring your dogs to join you on your explorations) and hilltop views across the vines to admire. This peaceful place is somewhere to sunbathe, rest in a shady spot with a favourite book, or bring a sketchpad to try and capture the landscape on paper. Cool off in the pool, stroll around the grounds, witness spectacular sunrises… then after dark, gaze up at the starry skies on clear nights – after a couple of days, you’ll almost certainly be completely chilled. There’s accommodation to match all styles of camping – and all pockets – and you have direct access to walks and cycle rides on quiet country roads past fields of vines, taking in the sleepy village of Mérignac (10 minutes on foot, five minutes by bike). If you need to top up the foodie supplies, head for Montendre (15 minutes’ drive), a small market town with shops for all your essentials, a weekly produce market (Thursdays, with night markets on Tuesday during July and August) and a scattering of restaurants and wine caves in which to sample the local vintages.

Liked: We were very fortunate with the choice of this site. A simple check in and a very warm welcome at this beautiful setting and peaceful campsite. From arriving to departure the welcome was fantastic. Spacious pitch, electric and water close by and pitches very well maintained .Free wifi at the pitch too. Brilliant hot showers. Swimming pool was spotless and cleaned daily. Linda and Richard are working really hard to maintain an excellent site and they were a delight to meet. Would we stay again. Absolutely.

Mademoiselle Green bell tent (no pets)

Liked: We loved our recent stay at Bellevues and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this site. The pool was immaculately clean and the views were stunning. Our hosts, Linda and Richard were extremely welcoming and helpful. We stayed with our two children in one of the bell tents for 6 nights and found that the set up had been really well thought out with everything we needed for the week. The bell tent came with a separate, private bathroom in a converted horsebox, plus a kitchen tent, outdoor seating area, sun loungers and gorgeous views. It's a beautiful site - 5 stars without a doubt.

Disliked: Nothing!

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: A warm welcome from Richard and Linda. The site is small, grassy and shaded. Water and power available at the pitch. Because of a plumbing issue the main toilets were out of action, but we were able to christen a glamping toilet beautifully crafted by Richard from a horsebox. It was clean and well maintained, with plenty of hot water for showers. There is a small pool, which was very welcome on a hot sticky day.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and choosing our site for your stay. We are so glad that we could offer you the use of the horsebox bathroom and you enjoyed the luxury!! Sorry that the WiFi doesn't yet reach the campers pitches , perhaps in the future it will. Enjoy the rest of your trip, hope to see you again in the future.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: What can I say, Bellevues was lovely, the owners were friendly and couldn't do enough for us. The views were amazing, the pool inviting, the facilities fab and very clean. You park your car away from your camping area but it is only a little away away and you can still see your car. it is really only a stones throw away. Also the camping/parking is in a gated area and a small fence (which you couldn't really see because covered by trees and bushes) so children or dogs can't get out. We will make sure we return and stay for longer.

Local attractions

For those who are keen to explore the Charente-Maritime on two wheels, the Galope Chopine Greenway passes through Chantillac (10 minutes’ drive) and provides easy cycling for families. Other kid-centric expeditions could include a trip to Mysterra, Parc des Labyrinthes à Montendre (45 minutes by bike) for interactive games in the woodland, or the Maison de la Forêt (40 minutes) in Haute-Saintonge Forest, which has themed displays on local wildlife and views across the woodland from its observation tower. Families looking for leisurely downtime together can spend the day floating on the lazy river and shooting down slides at Les Antilles de Jonzac waterpark, or stop by at the multimedia exhibits on the future of energy at the Maison de l’Energie – Espace FRANCE Rénov (both 20 minutes’ drive). For jaunts into photogenic towns, Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire (25 minutes) is packed with striking 15th-century mansions and châteaux. Jonzac (20 minutes) has its own landmark castle which stands over the Seugne Valley and is now open for tours of its lavish 17th-century apartments.
