Bring all of the family, including your pets, for a back-to-nature break at this peaceful spot in southwest France's sloping countryside. Bellevues Glamping and Camping is a small, characterful English-run site with stunning views across the vines and a valley between Cognac and Bordeaux. This peaceful place is somewhere to sunbathe, rest in a shady spot with a favourite book, or bring a sketchpad to try and capture the landscape on paper. Cool off in the pool, stroll around the grounds, witness spectacular sunrises… then after dark, gaze up at the starry skies on clear nights – after a couple of days, you’ll almost certainly be completely chilled. There’s accommodation to match all styles of camping – and all pockets – and you have direct access to walks and cycle rides on quiet country roads past fields of vines, taking in the sleepy village of Mérignac (10 minutes on foot, five minutes by bike). If you need to top up the foodie supplies, head for Montendre (15 minutes’ drive), a small market town with shops for all your essentials, a weekly produce market (Thursdays, with night markets on Tuesday during July and August) and a scattering of restaurants and wine caves in which to sample the local vintages.

Gostou This was a last minute find and we were delighted we came across it! We were greeted by our friendly hosts and made to feel at home. It’s a lovely small campsite but with all the facilities we needed for our 2 night stopover. The pool was fabulous and has the best views of the rolling French countryside.
We were grateful of the laundry facilities, there’s also an on site honesty shop with snacks, ice creams and cold drinks; and option to order croissants for breakfast.

Gostou Beautiful site with amazing views, as the name suggests - it definitely delivers! The pitches are generous with sun and shade, if needed. The facilities are spotless and the swimming pool is fab. Linda and Richard are fantastic hosts and go above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Não gostou Only suggestion but not a negative in any shape or form would be perhaps the owners could offer a croissant or bread service for the morning , as on a bike it’s a bit of a trek to the nearest boulangerie. On a site I’ve visited previously the owner cooked frozen croissant in her oven for the campers and they were perfect.

Gostou Peaceful site with amazing views, a great swimming pool and super friendly English owners. A short drive to a large supermarket which has everything you could need. I did a machine wash and there was a washing line I could use so everything dried quickly. Trees to sit under were great for some shade. Spacious field so plenty of room. Shower and toilet were spotless and hot water plentiful. Good washing up area. Great to have a toilet seat and paper, a luxury in France! WiFi was good. Hope to return soon.

For those who are keen to explore the Charente-Maritime on two wheels, the Galope Chopine Greenway passes through Chantillac (10 minutes’ drive) and provides easy cycling for families. Other kid-centric expeditions could include a trip to Maison de la Forêt (40 minutes) in Haute-Saintonge Forest, which has themed displays on local wildlife and views across the woodland from its observation tower. Families looking for leisurely downtime together can spend the day floating on the lazy river and shooting down slides at Les Antilles de Jonzac waterpark, or stop by at the multimedia exhibits on the future of energy at the Maison de l’Energie – Espace FRANCE Rénov (both 20 minutes’ drive).
