Landlocked life getting you down? Then plonk yourselves down 300 metres from the sea at Camping La Brande and feel the ocean breeze… This family-friendly park is on the Île d'Oléron, so you won't be short of beaches and coastal vistas here. It is also opposite the Moëze-Oléron Nature Reserve, so you'll spot all manner of migrating birds flitting overhead before setting out over the Atlantic. While the birds may venture far and wide, you're unlikely to need to make any such epic journeys while you're here: oodles of different landscapes can be explored without ever leaving the île, including the sandy Pointe de Gatseau headland in the south and the grassy marshland that covers the centre of the island. Back at base, Camping La Brande has plenty of alfresco leisure options, including two heated pools, waterslides, miniature golf, a spa area and sports pitches. The site staff can also sort scuba sessions in the surrounding area for guests who dig undersea dives. There are oyster farms directly opposite the site and there’s a fish wholesaler next door. Le Bistrot Loco, Camping La Brande's restaurant, has both fresh marine produce and non-seafood dishes on its menu. Fresh bread and pastries are also delivered to the site daily.

Local attractions

Thanks to the D26 road bridge, it's simple to drive over to Île d'Oléron. On the journey, you'll likely spot Fort Louvois out in the sea – visit this 17th-century fort by taking the free boat from Bourcefranc-le-Chapus (15 minutes' drive) or by walking over the causeway at low tide. There are also 140 kilometres of flat and well-maintained cycle trails here, so consider leaving the car behind for a day or two and hiring a bike at reception. Green-fingered guests may well want to check out some of the flora that thrives in these sunny climes: head to La Boirie botanical gardens (15 minutes) or Compostelle gardens on the mainland (40 minutes) to find out more. Rochefort (45 minutes) is the nearest big town on the mainland. It's a hub of naval history, with highlights including a historic rope factory and a major naval museum. It's also home to several more niche attractions, like the Rochefort-Martrou transporter bridge and an exhibition about what shopping was like in days gone by (Musée des Commerces d'Autrefois).
