The little Charente-Maritime town of Esnandes is a special spot, with the coastline of Aiguillon Bay on one side and the wetlands of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park on the other. That means a break here gives you access to all sorts of gorgeous landscapes, whether you’re looking out to sea or exploring the inland waterways on a small boat. On the edge of this little town is Camping Animal King, a small site that’s equally well placed for the beach (just over a kilometre away) and the town’s shop, bakery and restaurant. There’s a long history of mussel cultivation in the town too, so it’s a great idea to seek out some seafood at the restaurant by the beach at least once. This location gives you easy access to lots of lovely parts of the coastline, including the lovely islands of Oléron, Aix and Île de Ré. The gateway to all of these is La Rochelle, 20 minutes’ drive away and also an excellent place to find attractions, activities and places to eat. The campsite has been kept to a manageable size, so you won't be crammed in with lots of other people. Shower and toilet facilities have been provided, along with an outdoor pool where you can have a nice refreshing dip after a long day out. Dogs are welcome, and you should be able to find plenty of places to walk them nearby.

Disliked Everything was dirty, cleaning on this campsite is non exsistant, a few stray dogs romeing freely around,our pitch was full of dog poo.
Showers okish but no temp control so water was very hot

Liked Friendly staff, space on the spots, swimming pool, surrounding on the coast.

Disliked Sanitair! Old, defect, dirty, not clean. This absolutely must be renewed.
Wifi not working everywhere. No shop, food, fresh bread. Dogs walking free at the campsite.

Liked Wir hatten Ruhe und Natur gesucht und hier gefunden. Von diesem Campingplatz verlaufen wunderbare Fahrradwege nach La Rochelle. Man ist in 10 Minuten zu Fuß am Strand und schöner Natur.
Nachts war es ruhig, man hat nur das Meeresrauschen , Frösche, Grillen und ab und zu einen Hahn aus der Ferne krähen gehört. Elektrizität hat, funktioniert.

Disliked Leider kann man die Wassertemperatur nicht regeln und auch den Wasserstrahl nicht verändern. Die Wiese, auf der wir mit dem Wohnmobil stehen konnten, ist naturbelassen und uneben. Wir haben aber gerade gestanden, ohne auszugleichen. Wifi hat nicht funktioniert!

Liked Arrived to a very friendly staff member who spoke very good English. Gabriel. Said if we needed anything then to come and find him. There was an electric barrier we needed the code for to entre the campsite. So first instance good security

Disliked On searching out a spot to camp for the night. Noticed how disorganised grass hadn't been cut. There was rubbish laying around. Showers although clean were to hot to get in. Toilets were clean no lighting for the night. Washing up area was dirty. Toilet brushes left on side of sink draing board. No hot water. Felt dirty.
We only wanted to sleep one night. So we're able to wash in our camper van. Looked like the site was near to coast path. Which it was. But signs for falling rocks and it was much further away than 30 min walk. The town looked and felt very depressing. Only having a pizzeria local which wasn't open. The bar and burger bar wasn't open on the campsite. Looked like there were people living there full time. Not reccomended

Liked We drove on to the site and drove straight off. The owner seemed friendly enough but the campsite was full of rubbish. The toilets and shower rooms looked filthy. We didn’t even get out of our camper van as one of the site dogs was circling the van. This site felt very unsafe in our opinion.

Disliked Everything. Did not even stay the night!

A good place to start nearby is at the House of the Bay of the Marais Poitevin (10 minutes’ walk) for an insight into the area’s history and its role in the development of commercial mussel cultivation. More history is on display at Fort Boyard, commissioned by Louis XIV in the17th century. The offshore fortress can be visited on a boat trip from Rochefort (45 minutes’ drive). Elsewhere along the coast, you may like to play a round of golf with a sea view on the 18-hole course at Golf la Rochelle La Prée (10 minutes) or spend a day in La Rochelle (20 minutes), visiting the aquarium and maritime museum or tackling the treetop trails of Vertigo Parc La Rochelle Aventure. Alternatively, cross the bridges to explore Île de Ré (20 minutes) or Oléron (an hour). Turning your attention inland is a good idea too, because the lush green landscapes of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park are rather gorgeous. This area, often known as ‘Green Venice' because of its network of waterways, is a wildlife haven alive with birds, butterflies and dragonflies. There are walking and bike trails through the park, or you can join boat tours in Arçais (45 minutes).
