  • Wildlife haven on the edge of Esnandes, a short walk from town centre
  • In the Marais Poitevin, 20 minutes' drive from La Rochelle
  • Swimming pool on site; beach just over a kilometre away
The little Charente-Maritime town of Esnandes is a special spot, with the coastline of Aiguillon Bay on one side and the wetlands of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park on the other. That means a break here gives you access to all sorts of gorgeous landscapes, whether you’re looking out to sea or exploring the inland waterways on a small boat. On the edge of this little town is Camping Animal King, a small site that’s equally well placed for the beach (just over a kilometre away) and the town’s shop, bakery and restaurant. There’s a long history of mussel cultivation in the town too, so it’s a great idea to seek out some seafood at the restaurant by the beach at least once. This location gives you easy access to lots of lovely parts of the coastline, including the lovely islands of Oléron, Aix and Île de Ré. The gateway to all of these is La Rochelle, 20 minutes’ drive away and also an excellent place to find attractions, activities and places to eat. The campsite has been kept to a manageable size, so you won't be crammed in with lots of other people. Shower and toilet facilities have been provided, along with an outdoor pool where you can have a nice refreshing dip after a long day out. Dogs are welcome, and you should be able to find plenty of places to walk them nearby.

Liked: Staff did what they could

Disliked: A very tired site in need of modernisation located next to a water pool where a large number of ducks quacked their way through day and night. Also more than your fair share of mosquitos and other insects drawn by the still water. Also wifi did. Ot work anywhere on the site

Liked: The staff spoke good English and were very helpful. Beach was nice once you got there lots of information at the beach about the area

Disliked: When we got there it was cash only which wasn’t specified at the time of booking. Pool was closed as was the Cafe/bar. Most of the female toilets were out of order and the ones open were dirty. Was a 25 min walk to the beach. Would not book here again.

Liked: Nothink

Disliked: The site is dirty and not maintained most of the toilets weren't working swimming pool closed restaurant closed pitches were very stoney grass not cut. Not sure about the 2 x devils which greet you that are hung in the trees. The owner has bought new cabins but would have been better cleaning site up and installing new shower block

Local attractions

A good place to start nearby is at the House of the Bay of the Marais Poitevin (10 minutes’ walk) for an insight into the area’s history and its role in the development of commercial mussel cultivation. More history is on display at Fort Boyard, commissioned by Louis XIV in the17th century. The offshore fortress can be visited on a boat trip from Rochefort (45 minutes’ drive). Elsewhere along the coast, you may like to play a round of golf with a sea view on the 18-hole course at Golf la Rochelle La Prée (10 minutes) or spend a day in La Rochelle (20 minutes), visiting the aquarium and maritime museum or tackling the treetop trails of Vertigo Parc La Rochelle Aventure. Alternatively, cross the bridges to explore Île de Ré (20 minutes) or Oléron (an hour). Turning your attention inland is a good idea too, because the lush green landscapes of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park are rather gorgeous. This area, often known as ‘Green Venice' because of its network of waterways, is a wildlife haven alive with birds, butterflies and dragonflies. There are walking and bike trails through the park, or you can join boat tours in Arçais (45 minutes).
