The little Charente-Maritime town of Esnandes is a special spot, with the coastline of Aiguillon Bay on one side and the wetlands of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park on the other. That means a break here gives you access to all sorts of gorgeous landscapes, whether you’re looking out to sea or exploring the inland waterways on a small boat. On the edge of this little town is Camping Animal King, a small site that’s equally well placed for the beach (just over a kilometre away) and the town’s shop, bakery and restaurant. There’s a long history of mussel cultivation in the town too, so it’s a great idea to seek out some seafood at the restaurant by the beach at least once. This location gives you easy access to lots of lovely parts of the coastline, including the lovely islands of Oléron, Aix and Île de Ré. The gateway to all of these is La Rochelle, 20 minutes’ drive away and also an excellent place to find attractions, activities and places to eat. The campsite has been kept to a manageable size, so you won't be crammed in with lots of other people. Shower and toilet facilities have been provided, along with an outdoor pool where you can have a nice refreshing dip after a long day out. Dogs are welcome, and you should be able to find plenty of places to walk them nearby.

Local attractions

A good place to start nearby is at the House of the Bay of the Marais Poitevin (10 minutes’ walk) for an insight into the area’s history and its role in the development of commercial mussel cultivation. More history is on display at Fort Boyard, commissioned by Louis XIV in the17th century. The offshore fortress can be visited on a boat trip from Rochefort (45 minutes’ drive). Elsewhere along the coast, you may like to play a round of golf with a sea view on the 18-hole course at Golf la Rochelle La Prée (10 minutes) or spend a day in La Rochelle (20 minutes), visiting the aquarium and maritime museum or tackling the treetop trails of Vertigo Parc La Rochelle Aventure. Alternatively, cross the bridges to explore Île de Ré (20 minutes) or Oléron (an hour). Turning your attention inland is a good idea too, because the lush green landscapes of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park are rather gorgeous. This area, often known as ‘Green Venice' because of its network of waterways, is a wildlife haven alive with birds, butterflies and dragonflies. There are walking and bike trails through the park, or you can join boat tours in Arçais (45 minutes).

Disliked Plots not flat, toilets and showers disgraceful and travellers on site making it feel unsafe , left after 10 mins on arrival. Plus expensive.

Liked Super ambiance..un patron qui se démène pour satisfaire les vacanciers.. un concert vraiment top en prime..une équipe motivée à l écoute et souriante.. Niveau hygiène contrairement a ce qui a été dit moi j ai trouvé que c était très correct, propre même si les bâtiments ne sont pas de toute jeunesse.

J'ai juste apprécié la gentillesse de la personne qui nous a accueilli.

Disliked Le mobil home vieux et mal entretenu, toilette mauvaise évacuation, voir bouché, douche pareil, pas de climatisation ,pas de tv, pas de wifi, ustensiles de cuisine sale, plaque chauffante qui ne chauffe pas,
La literie je ne préfère pas en parler.
Les sanitaires en commun sont insalubre. Porte cassé douche bouché etc
Pour ma part c'est purement de l'escroquerie.

Powered grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Die Betreiber (-Familie?) meinen es sicher gut. Man wird freundlich empfangen, und ich glaube, dass ihnen vieles Nagative gar nicht bewusst ist. Wir waren vor zwei Jahren schon einmal hier und sind bewusst noch einmal gekommen. Damals war der Platz schon ziemlich abgerockt, aber er hatte irgendwie den Charme eines Winterquartiers von Schaustellern.

Disliked Das übelste zuerst: Toiletten und Waschräume werden offenbar komplett sich selber überlassen. Es ist fast unmöglich, eine Toilette in einem Zustand zu finden, der es ermöglicht, sie zu benutzen. Ich sah Mütter mit Kindern, die sich weinend weigerten, die Toiletten zu benutzen, weil sie sich so ekelten.
Die Kunden sind überwiegend eher nicht der klassischen Camper-Klientel zuzuordnen. Man sieht ziemlich viele ziemlich ramponierte Autos, die auch gerne frühmorgens repariert werden. Offenbar ist der Platz auch bei Großfamilien und Gruppen von jungen Männern beliebt. Daran ist natürlich grundsätzlich nichts auszusetzen, aber die Geräuschkulisse war definitiv nicht das, was wir uns für den Urlaub selbst auf einem Campingplatz vorstellen. Wären die sanitären Anlagen einigermaßen in Ordnung gewesen, wäre es noch gegangen. Aber so mussten wir bereits nach der ersten Nacht abreisen.
