The little Charente-Maritime town of Esnandes is a special spot, with the coastline of Aiguillon Bay on one side and the wetlands of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park on the other. That means a break here gives you access to all sorts of gorgeous landscapes, whether you’re looking out to sea or exploring the inland waterways on a small boat. On the edge of this little town is Camping Animal King, a small site that’s equally well placed for the beach (just over a kilometre away) and the town’s shop, bakery and restaurant. There’s a long history of mussel cultivation in the town too, so it’s a great idea to seek out some seafood at the restaurant by the beach at least once. This location gives you easy access to lots of lovely parts of the coastline, including the lovely islands of Oléron, Aix and Île de Ré. The gateway to all of these is La Rochelle, 20 minutes’ drive away and also an excellent place to find attractions, activities and places to eat. The campsite has been kept to a manageable size, so you won't be crammed in with lots of other people. Shower and toilet facilities have been provided, along with an outdoor pool where you can have a nice refreshing dip after a long day out. Dogs are welcome, and you should be able to find plenty of places to walk them nearby.

Liked The owners were willing to meet our vet’s fees when the site dog attacked and injured our dog.

Disliked The site was flooded (not the owners fault). The toilets were filthy as were the washing facilities, the only thing that worked was the electric. A dreadful site and we only stayed one night ( had booked three). Suggest a site to be avoided at all costs.

Disliked Everything. This place was an absolute dump. We were charged nearly £34.00 for a fully serviced pitch for a one night stay. The camping area was flooded. We had to park outside the toilet block as everywhere was so waterlogged. There was no running water, the electricity kept tripping out, the whole site was a shambles. There was only one working toilet as all the rest were locked, the showers hadn’t been cleaned for ages, an absolute disgrace. Thank goodness we carried bottled water with us as otherwise we would not have had a drink, been able to wash etc. The owner made no attempt to check on our well-being, we were left to fend for ourselves on this nightmare of a site. The website photographs show a great looking location, the reality is that this site is the worst place we could have chosen to stay at in France.

Liked Electricity and wifi OK

Disliked We did'nt like the place at all. The showers were there but very cold inside (no warming) only cold water, toilets and showers inferior. The pitches were muddy, the place very isolated and the cost too high. We decided to leave and expressed our opinions and money back demands to the owner who didn't gave any answer. Terrible place, stay out of it!

Disliked Sanitaires dans un etat deplorable de propreté on a l impression que ça n a pas ete nettoyé depuis six mois camping a l abandon une decharge a ciel ouvert dans le fond du camping aucun service pas d'epicerie de depannage pas de bar ou restaurant le seul point positif est que le propriétaire est agreable mais je pense qu il est depassé il faut qu il mette 100000€ pour tout rehabiliter dommage car le cadre est sympa

Local attractions

A good place to start nearby is at the House of the Bay of the Marais Poitevin (10 minutes’ walk) for an insight into the area’s history and its role in the development of commercial mussel cultivation. More history is on display at Fort Boyard, commissioned by Louis XIV in the17th century. The offshore fortress can be visited on a boat trip from Rochefort (45 minutes’ drive). Elsewhere along the coast, you may like to play a round of golf with a sea view on the 18-hole course at Golf la Rochelle La Prée (10 minutes) or spend a day in La Rochelle (20 minutes), visiting the aquarium and maritime museum or tackling the treetop trails of Vertigo Parc La Rochelle Aventure. Alternatively, cross the bridges to explore Île de Ré (20 minutes) or Oléron (an hour). Turning your attention inland is a good idea too, because the lush green landscapes of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park are rather gorgeous. This area, often known as ‘Green Venice' because of its network of waterways, is a wildlife haven alive with birds, butterflies and dragonflies. There are walking and bike trails through the park, or you can join boat tours in Arçais (45 minutes).
