The little Charente-Maritime town of Esnandes is a special spot, with the coastline of Aiguillon Bay on one side and the wetlands of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park on the other. That means a break here gives you access to all sorts of gorgeous landscapes, whether you’re looking out to sea or exploring the inland waterways on a small boat. On the edge of this little town is Camping Animal King, a small site that’s equally well placed for the beach (just over a kilometre away) and the town’s shop, bakery and restaurant. There’s a long history of mussel cultivation in the town too, so it’s a great idea to seek out some seafood at the restaurant by the beach at least once. This location gives you easy access to lots of lovely parts of the coastline, including the lovely islands of Oléron, Aix and Île de Ré. The gateway to all of these is La Rochelle, 20 minutes’ drive away and also an excellent place to find attractions, activities and places to eat. The campsite has been kept to a manageable size, so you won't be crammed in with lots of other people. Shower and toilet facilities have been provided, along with an outdoor pool where you can have a nice refreshing dip after a long day out. Dogs are welcome, and you should be able to find plenty of places to walk them nearby.

Liked The pitch was spacious ,the facilities were kept immaculately clean but dated . The staff were friendly and helpful .

Disliked Not the sites fault but not near a usable beach ! Near the sea but all mud .This was disappointing as was expecting some beach days .

Liked Le cadre, le prix, la gentillesse du personnel.

Disliked Nous avons eu de la chance d'être en fin de saison avec peu de vacanciers. Mais j'imagine comme peut être problématique le nombre insuffisant de douches et de sanitaires lorsque le camping est plein. La piscine est un peu vétuste, froide et abîmée mais c'est toujours sympa d'y piquer une tête. Vu le tarif, il faut demeurer cohérent. Moi et mes enfants on a passé un super séjour avec notre tente !

Liked À 20 minutes de La Rochelle en voiture

Disliked Dès l’arrivée on nous dit « couper le contacte, descendez du véhicule » sûrement pas méchant mais assez maladroit sur le ton employé. Camping avec des alentours très bruyant: canard, route, travaux, chasse … Les sanitaire sont très vétuste, toilette à la turque uniquement. De plus pour les emplacements c’est simple ils ne sont pas délimité touts le monde s’installe comme il le souhaite comme pour notre cas un jeune couple ayant passé la nuit à boire rigoler et mettre de la musique jusqu’à 6h du matin à 2 mètres de notre tente (malgré les demandes de plusieurs campeur de faire moins de bruit) la première nuit, donc pas d’intimité et très bruyant en plus d’être non adapté au sardine de tente car trop rocailleux (peut être uniquement où nous avons choisit de nous mettres). Bref, on sent que le camping est là pour faire de l’argent mais c’est pas grave car ils ont une « forêt enchantée » impraticable et une « rivière…. » (je ne me rappelle pas comment ils l’appellent) ultra bruyante car en face d’un élevage de canard/chenil à 5 mètre sur l’autre rive.

Liked Quiet but the best pitch on the site. Very clean ablutions which is great even though there was a lot of campers using it. Same with the showers. Very friendly staff and even the ones that couldn't speak English were friendly and helpfull (Google translate helped)

Disliked It's not a dislike, more an observation but the pool area is looking a little tired and could do with some TLC but it served a purpose. Wifi at our pitch didnt work but did on other areas of the camp.

We had a very pleasant two night stay and would definitely recommend.

Liked Perfectly located for la Rochelle and other places of interest.
Large pitches.
Great hosts!

Disliked Disorganised layout. No real pitch definition, very haphazard. Grass uneven and potholes on the pitch; not an issue for the Caravan, but certainly for sitting with the table outside.
Toilets cleaned regularly but extremely dated and not welcoming.
Pools needs serios attention.

Local attractions

A good place to start nearby is at the House of the Bay of the Marais Poitevin (10 minutes’ walk) for an insight into the area’s history and its role in the development of commercial mussel cultivation. More history is on display at Fort Boyard, commissioned by Louis XIV in the17th century. The offshore fortress can be visited on a boat trip from Rochefort (45 minutes’ drive). Elsewhere along the coast, you may like to play a round of golf with a sea view on the 18-hole course at Golf la Rochelle La Prée (10 minutes) or spend a day in La Rochelle (20 minutes), visiting the aquarium and maritime museum or tackling the treetop trails of Vertigo Parc La Rochelle Aventure. Alternatively, cross the bridges to explore Île de Ré (20 minutes) or Oléron (an hour). Turning your attention inland is a good idea too, because the lush green landscapes of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park are rather gorgeous. This area, often known as ‘Green Venice' because of its network of waterways, is a wildlife haven alive with birds, butterflies and dragonflies. There are walking and bike trails through the park, or you can join boat tours in Arçais (45 minutes).
