  • Relaxing campsite on the eastern coast of the Île d'Oléron
  • A 15-minute drive from Boyardville or the mainland
  • Outdoor pool heated to 28°C throughout the season
Located on the eastern coast of the gorgeous Île d'Oléron off France's Atlantic coast, Camping Ostrea is a relaxing site close to beaches, traditional oyster beds and scenic cycle routes. It's very easy to get around here, as the site's a mere 15-minute drive from the mainland via a bridge – a free shuttle bus that runs in the high season also stops at the site, allowing you to get to local beaches and attractions stress-free. Camping Ostrea is a spacious site with over 100 spacious pitches, all of which have access to a wide range of amenities. As well as essentials like toilets and showers, guests here have leisure facilities that include an outdoor pool heated to 28°C throughout the season and a pétanque court with views over the sea. The kids, meanwhile, will be able to burn off some steam at the on-site play area, while guests young and old will doubtless appreciate the simple but high-quality menu at Camping Ostrea's snack bar. For supplies, meals out, a bakery or trips to a waterpark, head to Dolus-d'Oléron, a small town five minutes' drive from base.

Local attractions

There's plenty to keep you entertained on the island, from the Île d'Oléron's enviable network of cycle paths – hire bikes in Dolus-d'Oléron (five minutes' drive) if you haven't brought your own – to its dozens of sandy beaches, like Plage de Vert Bois (10 minutes) and Plage de Boyardville (15 minutes). Much of the eastern side of the island is given over to traditional oyster harvesting, making this a great spot to try fresh local seafood. A few kilometres from base, Boyardville (15 minutes) has spectacular views over the Atlantic, including Fort Boyard, an offshore fortress in the Pertuis d'Antioche straits that can also be visited by boat from the town. You should also head to Boyardville if you're interested in day trips to other islands like the tiny Île d'Aix or mainland destinations like La Rochelle (an hour and 15 minutes by road if you prefer to stick to dry land). Over on the mainland, you might like to wait until low tide and walk over the causeway to Fort Louvois (20 minutes), take a ride on the famous transporter bridge at Rochefort (40 minutes) or visit family-friendly theme parks like Oceana Lumina (40 minutes).
