Family-friendly site five minutes' drive from Bourcefranc-le-Chapus
Opposite a sandy beach and next to a sailing/watersports school
Bread deliveries and fresh fruit and veg sales on site in summer

There are some folks who would (wisely) suggest that there are no finer days than those spent by the sea. Those folks are likely to be very pleased with their lot during a stay at Camping La Giroflée, a peaceful Poitou-Charentes coastal site five minutes’ drive from Bourcefranc-le-Chapus. This is a super spot for seaside antics – there’s a sandy beach just across the road from the site and a sailing school next door where you can get stuck in to all sorts of watersports. Sea-view cycle rides are all around too, either on the Vélodysée bike path (which stretches for a muscle-busting 1200 kilometres along the country’s Atlantic coastline) or over on the island of Oléron, which faces the site and can be reached with around 20 minutes of pedalling. Those whose packing situation didn’t allow them to bring bikes can hire them on site. For eats, it’s a five-minute drive (or 10-minute bike outing) to the shops in Bourcefranc-le-Chapus, although you can order bread deliveries on site in the summer months, and local farmers drop by with fresh fruit and veg a few times a week. There’s a restaurant next door and barbecues are permitted on site, but if you’re after a special dinner à deux, it’s perhaps worth seeking out nearby oyster sellers and trotting back to the beach for supper as the sun sets. Should you briefly tire of the beach (pffft), there’s a playground and pétanque court on site for a bit of alternative entertainment.

Local attractions

If life on the ocean wave appeals, make tracks to the sailing school a couple of minutes’ stroll away to learn the ropes for yourself, or devolve captaining responsibilities to the pros by boarding a boat trip from Bourcefranc-le-Chapus, five minutes’ drive away. More sea-themed days out might include meandering around the oyster farms in Marennes Plage (five minutes’ drive), a trip to the maritime museum in Rochefort (half an hour) and eyeballing underwater beasties at La Rochelle’s famed aquarium (50 minutes). Sticking firmly to dry land for a while, swing by the splendid citadel of Brouage (15 minutes), where the fortified city walls guard all sorts of well-preserved 17th-century structures including a prison and an underground port. The Zoo de la Palmyre (half an hour) makes a fab day out for the small sorts, and there are lots of excellent walking and bike trails taking in beaches, forest and salt marshes on the island of Oléron (20 minutes’ bike ride over the bridge).

Liked: Friendly staff Nice secluded location. Good facilities Clean site

Disliked: absolutely no chance of getting on the site if you are late due to traffic. the site is very tight for a large towcar and twin axle.

Liked: Huge pitch, nice and flat, well separated. Good clean services

Disliked: Bit far from any cafe, bars restaurants, one next door seemed rarely open after August.

Liked: Easy check in but note when you arrive, park outside as you need a key fob from reception (€20 refundable deposit) to open the barrier. Free choice of pitch if camping but note some area are larger than others and have two pitches and some four so tour the site before you pick then notify reception of your choice. Some areas have good tree coverage for shade Standard electrical connection not French adapter required All taps supposedly gave fresh water Clean but typically French toilet block (unisex) but note you need your own toilet roll and there are no loo seats. Showers push button and clean and warm. Sinks generally clean. There is a microwave and fridge freezer available on an honesty basis Pizza van Saturday and Sunday Fresh bread available from mobile van service in morning Quiet site, good access to beach and bike hire for cycling to local lagoon etc Free Wi-Fi but slow especially when lots of people around La Tremblade over the bridge is a nice evening haunt for food etc and market on Sunday night and definitely worth a visit

Disliked: No local shops in walking distance but supermarkets a short drive away. There is a restaurant next door but menu choice is limited. Half day bike hire would be nice Local proximity to oyster and muscle beds means mosquitoes a problem so bring lots of anti mossie stuff. Also a problem when out and about eating etc

Liked: Le personnel très accueillant et sympathique , le lieu calme , les douches et WC communes propres et les réfrigérateurs mis à disposition et la proximité de l’île d’Oléron , la Tremblade ainsi que des plus grandes villes

Disliked: Le fait que le camping soit en face d’une plage avec de la vase, des cailloux et beaucoup d’algues , les moustiques étaient fortement présents

Liked: a Lovely little site clean and tidy around the site, in the perfect location to go off and explore.

Disliked: The Dishwashing cleaning area could have been much cleaner, in certain floor areas, due to this we washed our dishes at our pitch.

Disliked: Les locataires précédents ou voisins qui ne prennent pas la peine d'aller aux WC la nuit et urinent au fond de l'emplacement. Avec la chaleur et l'absence de pluie, au fond de l'emplacement il y a la même odeur que dans le métro...

Liked: Pitch was great Needed extension on power lead but was warned before I got there

Disliked: Told I was taking two spaces up but was in my own pitch. A French camper in a caravan said his pitch smaller than mine and kicked of with the manager. Wanted me to move. Shame I was parked correctly
