  • Family-friendly site five minutes' drive from Mers-les-Bains
  • Half an hour from the Bay of the Somme for seal spotting
  • Covered heated pool, kids' activities, bouncy castle and snack bar
To the sea, to the sea… say it over and over if you wish, as there are loads of attractions along the pretty Picardie coastline – enough to keep drawing you back to the seaside time and again however long you stay. Beaches, of course, but also nature reserves, a maritime forest, seals to spy, a cliffside funicular, watersports, a seaside steam train… Settle in for a stay at family-run Camping Le Rompval for easy access to all of the above: the seaside resort of Mers-les-Bains is a five-minute drive away, and Le Tréport and its funicular railway is just across the harbour. A covered heated pool means pooltime is a goer on site come rain or shine, while table tennis, pétanque, a bouncy castle and a playground keep things busy on dry land. And, in a sensible bit of site design, the snack bar is right next to the play area, opening out onto a raised terrace area from which you can oversee (literally) your small folk as you sit back with a coffee or pizza. In the heady days of high summer the site also lays on organised activities – sports and other frolics for kids on weekdays and at least one evening of family fun per week.

Liked: Nice site although our pitch was covered by trees so no sun at all. Good facilities and friendly staff. For us it was quite a distance from the town.

Electric grass pitch (comfort)

Liked: Very clean site, had everything and more for a very reasonable price, all pitches with electric and water, nicely sectioned off with a pretty bush between each site. Children loved the pool and play area. Well located, however fair bit of road noise. Would visit again but ask for a pitch in the sun, and away from the road

Disliked: Road noise and shaded pitch

Electric grass pitch (comfort)

Liked: Friendly staff, small site close to town.

Disliked: Lack of toilet seats (i know it is not unusual, but still a dislike) and the use of electronic wristbands to control shower times to only 8 minutes per shower. 8 minutes is actually long enough but giving people a limit is annoying. The pool dis not appear very clean, nor the shower stalls, which regardless of the poor weather could have been better maintained. We stayed in a tent but it appeared the chalets/static caravans were really crammed in, i would have expected more privacy for the amount beung charged for a static.

Fully-serviced grass pitch (privilege)

Liked: The pool was warm and clean. The site let us onto our pitch early in the morning. Site was fine and good basic facilities. Good place to stop off after crossing. 40 minute drive from Dieppe.

Disliked: Toilets basic without toilet seats. The showers had a limit of 8 minutes using a wrist band which just added an extra stress to the holiday.

Liked: Helpful staff on arrival that explained where everything was

Disliked: They don’t have toilet seats on any of the toilets which are all unisex. The pitches are quite small and fairly tight so if taking a caravan you need to be confident manoeuvring or have a motor mover.

Local attractions

Mers-les-Bains is a mightily handsome place to wander around – head to the seafront to see some of the finest of the colourful villas, built in the late 19th century with swish architectural features to look out for (balconies, turrets and ceramic nameplates among them). If it’s activity you seek, the town has a horse riding centre, a tennis club, a bowling alley and watersports centre. Across the harbour from Mers-les-Bains is Le Tréport, famed for its funicular railway up the chalk cliffs for fab views over the town and out to sea. Look toward the land side and you’ll hopefully be able to spot the Château d’Eu, just a few minutes’ drive away and also worth a visit, not only to see the grand mansion itself but also to trot through the park and gardens. Château fans are also well advised to visit Château Fort de Rambures, half an hour from the site, to see a proper classic castle (all fairytale-style circular turrets, pointy roofs and a moat, of course).
