General

  • In the countryside 10 minutes from beaches
  • Sunny or shaded pitches surrounded by trees and flowers
  • Pools, paddling pool, solarium, fishing, playground and tennis

Just very Vendée fab... the greenly gorgeous, perfectly placed and warmly friendly Saint-Julien-des-Landes site of La Bretonnière is an absolute smasher.

Deep in peaceful countryside but only 10 minutes from the beach, La Bretonnière is a fably set out site for family and friendly hols, with a range of activity and leisure options to keep all ages busy from dawn to le dusk (par exemple, just look at that waterpark). It's only a few minutes' drive from the lush waters of Lac du Jaunay and access to the region's 800+ kilometres of bicycle routes and hiking trails, a couple of kilometres from Saint-Julien-des-Landes, and about 35 minutes' drive from sailing, jetskiing and other watery antics at the swish seaside resort of Les Sables-d'Olonne.

But back to that waterpark. There are three fine pools on site for the family to splash about in, including an outdoor pool, a semi-covered one, and a good-sized paddling pool with games, toys and jets for teeny tiddlers. As you'd contentedly expect from such a well-appointed site, there's plenty of sunbathing space at the poolside solarium too, with loungers provided for your sunny lounging.

Also on site are a fishing pond, a games room, a playground and a tennis court, as well as evening entertainment, daily activities and a kids' club in summer. There's a handsome big bar with terrace too, takeaway, and a grocery shop where fresh bread, pizza and chips are all served in July and August. Fresh bread is available to order outside the summer months.

La Bretonnière has spacious grass pitches, on sunny or shaded spots and surrounded by trees and flowers buzzed around by bees and butterflies. Amenities include toilets and showers, a drying room, a launderette and a parent and baby washroom. The site has free wifi.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

We stayed on this campsite for one week with a three year old and 6 month old.

The site has a fair amount of pitches but whilst we stayed in Mid-July, they didn't seem to be over crowded.

We were one of a very small amount of English people on the camp site but this really doesn't matter. This was our first trip to France and knew only the basics of French like please and thank you. Most guests and staff had a great comprehension of English which helped us settle in just fine.

The shower and toilet facilities are plentiful and always clean.

The pitches vary in size but there are a mixture of sun-filled and shaded areas. The pitches are not uniform and seldom bordered with large hedges but the occasional tree helps with hanging a washing line. We preferred this style as it enabled us to socialise with our neighbours which helped.

    Disliked:

My only reservation which is not strictly the campsites fault is their policy on swimwear. I wasn't aware before I left for France that swimming shorts are frowned upon and speedo style trunks are the only acceptable form of clothing. Everywhere else we visited did not enforce this policy and I was able to relax however this campsite is fairly strict on this. I did not swim with my family for two days as I couldn't find anything to fit me. Eventually the owners made an exception and I was able to enjoy my holiday in my own longer swimming shorts

Local attractions

It's lovely land around here, close to the coast and Jaunay lake, and within easy reach of the local stretch of the Vendée's spectacular hundreds of kilometres' worth of bike trails and walking routes. July and August sees many traditional festivals in the nearby towns and villages; the Bretonnière team can point you in the right direction if you want to check these out.

Anglers, boaters and fans of peaceful hikes have the whole heap at peaceful Lac du Jaunay, in a wooded valley three kilometres away. (If you're in the region over the mid-August bank holiday, a definite must-do is the Lac du Jaunay firework display: not at all peaceful but simply splendid.) The lake is in a wildlife and birdwatching haven: take the 12-kilometre walk starting from La Chapelle-Hermier to see what species you can spy.

Within easy day trip distance – and much recommended – are the dunes and sands of Bretignolles-sur-Mer (15 minutes' drive), the fishing town and harbour of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, and the popular resort of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez, both within 25 minutes. If you're up for an island day – also much recommended – hail the ferry to the Ile d'Yeu, running regularly from Saint-Gilles, or drive for about an hour to reach the spectacular island of Noirmoutier.
