General

  • Stay at a family site in the grounds of a stunning 19th-century castle
  • Cyclists' paradise: on-site bike rental, access to Vélodyssée route
  • Pool, waterslides, fishing lake, miniature golf, massages all on site

Spectacular château, peaceful countryside and loads to keep you busy… Ticking all the boxes? Make your way to Camping Château la Forêt, a site in the grounds of a stunning 19th-century castle on the edge of Saint Julien des Lands in the Vendée region of Pays de la Loire.

With so much scenic countryside to cycle through, you’ll be glad of the on-site bike rental at Château la Forêt. There are more than 1,000 kilometres of cycling trails in the Vendée, including part of the Vélodyssée long-distance route, and the top-notch tracks on Île d’Yeu are also just a boat ride away…

All that sounds fab, but you’d be forgiven for never wanting to leave the site. You can take a dip in one of the pools, have a go on the waterslides, cast a line at the fishing lake, putt around on the miniature golf course, rack up the points in pétanque or take to the sports fields, then relax with a massage. Phew! Try saying all of that in one breath…

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, grab a quick bite or takeaway at the snack bar, or head to the restaurant for something more substantial, then wash it down with a drink at the bar.

Prefer to take care of meals yourself? You can fire up the barbecue and pile it high with goodies from the on-site grocery store or one of the nearby shops, or you can nab yourself a table at one of the restaurants within 10 minutes of Château la Forêt.

This site is a member of Yelloh! Village group.

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

The indoor swimming pool is open between 26/04 and 06/09.

pool great, kids loved the water slides and Le Grand Defi was amazing, and 10% discount for those who are staying on the campsite.
Shower blocks and toilets always spotless, always plenty of soap and loo roll.

    Disliked:

Pool/ slides could have done with some supervision as on a few occasions there were teenage boys acting in a very dangerous fashion and spoiling it for everyone else. I was seriously worried that there would be an injury on our last day.

The beautiful, peaceful setting of this well kept site. The staff were all very helpful and friendly. There was enough to keep our 11 year old entertained but did not have the craziness and crowds of a 'club' site.

    Disliked:

    Not staying longer.

Loved the adult only pool with the beautiful view of the chateau. Kids loved the water slides. We loved the site as the pitches were large and surrounded by trees. The bar was perfect with a lovely courtyard and Pelforth on tap. Showers were lovely and hot. Staff were really friendly. Great band - Revolution. Zipwire was awesome. We will be back. Thank you.

Loved the setting. Lots of trees for shade, beautiful chateau. Kids loved swimming pool. Lots to do if you choose to. Mini golf, ping pong, entertainment, bouncy castle (all free). Great pizzas from snack bar. Simple restaurant menu but great steak. Lots to do in the area. Had lovely beach day at sables d'olonne. Ooh and delicious ice creams.

    Disliked:

Very small showers. Hardly any space to get dried. However, always hot water so can't complain. Btw the site seem to have changed the times they cleaned the toilet block. The sign said 7-8am but they had always been done before this. Perhaps they had responded to feedback....?

Eurocamp style. Not really the place for independent campers. 21/08/2017

Pool with waterslide. Short walk to the village shops. Lots of activities if you are staying a while.

    Disliked:

Overflow area for camping pitches numbered 300 and above was little more than an open field with poorly marked plots. Other campers used the field for their dogs, not always cleaning up after them...

Loud music from bar until after 11. People wandering around at night a bit too "happy" after a few too many drinks!

Very safe site, family friendly, lots of families who had been coming year after year (some for over 30 years!)
Beautiful setting next to lake and Chateau
Friendly staff and owner always around and helpful
Lots of activities to do onsite and close by
Short drive to many interesting towns/beaches
Diverse bunch there with UK, Netherlands and France being the main visitors at the site.

    Disliked:

All shower/toilet blocks were closed off for cleaning around 8am for half an hour which was a little impractical with people waking up. Luckily the bathroom by the reception was still open however so we managed fine.

Some of the entertainment the first week was a little on the loud side, in week two it was much better and quieter.

Local attractions

You don’t have to be an amateur Tour de France competitor to explore this part of the Vendée – you can make the 10-minute drive to Lac du Jaunay for tons of hiking trails (including a 12-kilometre jaunt starting in La Chapelle-Hermier), or venture as far as Les Sables d’Olonne where you can join a boat tour of the salt marshes.

While in Les Sables, taking to the water is a must. The seaside town is the starting point of the Vendée Global solo race, so it stands to reason that this is a prime spot for learning to sail. There’s more to the town than the ocean though: visit the Museum of Shells, explore the Sainte-Croix abbey or take the kids to the Sables zoo.

There’s loads else for the kids to get their teeth into – less than five minutes from the site, Grand Défi will keep them entertained for ages, with tree-top adventuring, paintball, laser tag and pony rides. If that’s not enough for them, they can play at giants in Vendée Miniature or spend a day at the Puy du Fou historical theme park, just under an hour away.
