It’s close to all the main attractions of Les Sables d’Olonne, and it’s also got a whole bunch of leisure activities of its own on site – and there you have two solid reasons why Camping Le Puits Rochais makes a fine base for a Vendée family holiday. This wooded park, spread over four hectares, is in a peaceful spot on the edge of the resort, around a kilometre from the coast and a few minutes’ drive from the main beach, the marina and the zoo (and also, on a more practical front, from the local markets, supermarkets, bakeries and restaurants). Bikes can be hired on site for an easy way to get around the resort. An aquarium, a waterpark and a tree-climbing centre are also within a half-hour drive – and if you don’t mind venturing a little further you can get to the Puy du Fou theme park in around an hour. Too far? Just stay put – there’s plenty to keep you busy on site… For starters, Camping Le Puits Rochais has a great aquatic area with a heated pool and several waterslides to splash down; there’s also a large play area, a multisports court, a tennis court and a games room for a bit of activity away from the water. Kids’ activities and evening entertainment run on site in summer too, so you’ll want to leave a bit of time for those. Likewise, if you don’t fancy heading out for food, you can acquire supplies at the site’s food shop, pick up a takeaway or take a table at the bar or restaurant.

Local attractions

Les Sables d’Olonne has sand in its name for a reason – and that’s the sandy beach, which stretches out over three kilometres with places to rent watersports kit along the way or pick up drinks at beachfront bars. For a break from beach time, take a visit to the town’s zoo, which is home to more than more than 500 exotic beasts. For a bit more activity, head to the go-karting track in the resort, book a round of golf on the seafront course in Bourgenay (10 minutes’ drive) or clamber up into the trees at Le Grand Défi adventure park (25 minutes). There are a couple of parachuting outfits in the resort too if you’re up for real adventure – and it’s a 25-minute drive to the O’Gliss waterpark if you prefer your thrills a little less intrepid. Something a little gentler to fill a day or two? Watch the fish gliding about at Aquarium de Vendée (10 minutes) or learn a few sweet facts and see chocolate-making in action at the Chocolate Museum Gelencser (half an hour).
