  • Cosy, family-friendly site a 20-minute walk from Grand Plage beach
  • A 10-minute drive from beach activities at Saint Gilles Croix de Vie
  • Pool and snack bar (high season); wifi, pétanque, shop and bike rental
Voyage around the Vendée department in the knowledge you’ll be bounding back each night to compact, cosy and conveniently located Camping Le Jaunay on the outskirts of Givrand, a 10-minute drive from Bretignolles-sur-Mer and Saint Gilles Croix de Vie. The coast’s even quicker to reach than these top tourist towns – the long and sandy beaches of Grand Plage and nudists’ fave Plage Naturiste Du Petit Pont are both around a 20-minute walk from the park. To travel on water or head off by horseback instead of on foot, Les Canoës du Marais (a couple of minutes away) rents kayaks, paddleboards and pedalos, while tours through the dunes aboard a beast of burden begin from Les Ecuries de la Sauzaie (20 minutes). And if you’d rather relax? The site’s swimming pool opens from May onwards and is a swish spot for submerging yourself in the water after bike rides on the multiple cycle trails running close to the park (or freshwater fishing sessions on the Jaunay river bordering it). There’s also no need to veer far from the grounds for grub as the snack bar serves up pizzas, burgers and fries (in high season), while the convenience shop sells edible bits and bobs. Also in the summer months – between July and August – pétanque tournaments are organised weekly and a disco’s put on by DJ Seb. For other times of the year, facilities like table football, ping-pong tables, darts and board games cater to competitive streaks…

Local attractions

Split your time between two popular seaside resorts on a stay here: Saint Gilles Croix de Vie and Bretignolles-sur-Mer (both 10 minutes’ drive). Head to the former for wanders down by the port and through the town, stopping at upscale restaurants and coffee shops with excellent views. The latter place has a bunch of beaches for sailing, sandcastle-building and sunbathing, including Normandelière (15 minutes), known for its watersports organisers. Stroll into the centre of town to browse the street markets (word to the wise: they switch from Sundays and Thursdays to Mondays and Tuesdays in July and August). To amp up the pace after ambling around pretty places, whizz over to Atlantic Toboggan SARL waterpark (20 minutes) to splash down twisting chutes and steep kamikaze slides into a massive lake. There are also kids’ pools, whirlpools and waterfalls here for calmer aquatic times. Often on the hunt for animals during a hol? See around 40 threatened species, from monkeys and anteaters to penguins and lions, at Parc Zoologique des Sables d'Olonnes (35 minutes). Alternatively, travel a touch further for one of France's most spectacular theme parks, the history-themed Puy du Fou (an hour and 10 minutes).
