General

  • Stunning site around an 18th-century castle and lake
  • Within 25 minutes' drive of Le Mans and two hours from Paris
  • Free fishing, pool, château bar, restaurant, farm and free tours

Pretty, peaceful and in spectacular surrounds including a château and a fishing lake – ooh la la and then some.

Scenic, friendly and fably equipped Camping Le Château de Chanteloup is in old-style countryside near Sille-Le-Philippe in the Sarthe department, about 25 minutes' drive from the famed racing track of du Mans and two hours from Paris. It's all set on a beaut and carefully preserved 22-hectare setting of meadows, woodland, gardens, an 18th-century castle and a lake for canoeing and angling. Like the rest of the many activities, fishing is popular here (and free), so pack your kit and get ready to land carp, roach and tench.

There's simply stacks to do at this luxury and fully kitted out park, from strolling or cycling around the lush grounds, to getting active with hours of swimming, badminton, ping pong, mountain biking, canoeing and pétanque. A football pitch, two volleyball courts and a basketball hoop are also on site: do hone your skills in all before arriving as friendly competitions are regularly held in these (as well as in pétanque, fishing, basketball and ping pong).

More restfully, you can take yourself off to the pool, for swims, floats and lounges on the sunbeds alongside, while the kids splash about among the water toys of the paddling pool. Or simply have an early snooze instead, as a kids' club for ages four to 10 is run from mid-morning every day in high season by bilingual activity leaders.

Other high season organised activities (there are many) include sports events and competitions for teenagers and adults every afternoon including water games, fishing, pétanque Olympics and treasure hunts in the forest; regular aperitifs on the terrace and barbecue nights with music and singing, and themed buffets including dessert, cheese and wine nights. The annual Chanteloup Academy at the end of July is open to all who yearn to perform: this, of course is your gleeful opportunity to thoroughly embarrass the kids...

A restaurant and takeaway runs in the farm courtyard for dins every evening, and the Chanteloup bar is open throughout the season in the west wing of the castle for ice cream, drinks and coffee on the terrace or in the garden lounge, a cosy spot looking out onto the château. For peaceful retreats, a billiards table, TV room and book exchange are in the castle's east wing.

Free guided tours of the grounds are available from the dedicated and amiable team. Guests are also welcome to potter around the miniature farm at the entrance to the property, to coo over the critters and pick up a clutch of fresh eggs. Within 10 minutes' drive, bag a 50% discount for Chanteloup guests to use the sports courts, heated pool and sauna of the nearby leisure club, or tee off at a discount at golf club of Sargé, run by an English family.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Love the site, spacious, clean and really well equipped .
The staff were really friendly and helpful, even assisting with the travel cot!
The yurts perfect and we had everything we needed.

    Disliked:

Our yurt was on the lawn, just by the terrace. Would have much preferred to have been somewhere away from the bar and piano.
We didn't realise that the week we booked was towards the end of the French high season. This meant the activities for teens had finished, sadly this was a big factor in choosing the site.

Beautiful Chateau by a lake, with a lovely pool and brilliant children's play area with wooden houses, bouncy castle and trampoline (secluded away so shouldn't put off those without children). Large spacious pitches, quirky communal areas with large open teepees, good bar and restaurant and spotless washrooms. Handy location near Le Man's. One of the best campsites we've visited.

Very friendly and we liked it so much that we booked again for a couple of nights on the way back and cut short our stay at another campsite in Carcans!! Love the fact that fresh bread and pastries brought into site each morning. Very clean facilities and very friendly staff. The girls spent most of their time in the pool. Our first time away abroad with our dogs and they seemed to love the campsite too!

Local attractions

You may decide just to stay on site with all the kingly and queenly options at your regal fingertips, but do make some time to get out and about as well – as with the site, there's lots to do in the Sarthe surroundings.

Zip along to Le Mans for what the Camping Le Château de Chanteloup owners declare is the most beaut Gallo-Roman spot in France: this medieval city is full of houses from the 16th to 18th centuries; the stained glass windows in the cathedral should enthrall even non-historic kids, and the Nuit des Chimères light and sound shows in July and August are a must-see if you're around these parts in summer.

Under half an hour away is the Le Mans racing track, home to the oldest sports car endurance race in the world (since 1923, petrolhead types) as well as the track's motorsports museum. Also much recommended by the team is Ferté-Bernard, involved in the world's first motoring Grand Prix way back in 1903; the small city of Montmirail, and traditional villages such as Asnières-on-Vègre and Le Grand Lucé. The Châteaux of the Loire Valley region is within driving distance for day trips.

Paris is just over two hours away.
