General

  • Friendly woodland site three kilometres from Sillé-le-Guillaum
  • A few minutes from a watersports lake and sandy beach
  • Snack bar with terrace, miniature golf, play area and bouncy castles

Strewth, this Sarthe site is rightly sorted for small types. Camping Les Tournesols is a properly family-friendly place, not only crammed with stuff for kids to get stuck into, but with a knowledgeable, welcoming team who'll happily assist on advising you on local destinations desirable for your own brand of munchkins. And if your parlez vous français isn't quite up to scratch? The necessary info can be imparted in anglais aussi.

Les Tournesols is a woodland site, a couple of kilometres from Sillé-le-Guillaume. Your small sorts will find loads to bounce around at on site (inflatables included, natch), but they'll clamour to get out and about too when they find out what's in the surroundings: a lake a few minutes' drive away has fishing, sailing, canoeing and kayaking, or you could just bask or build sandcastles at sandy Sillé beach. Woodland hikes are on your doorstep too, there are loads of walking and cycling routes in the region, and peaceful gardens galore are around Le Mans, the second greenest area in France.

Facilities on site include a heated pool, a miniature golf course, a play area and pétanque and volleyball courts. A free kids' club runs in high season.

Entertainment for all, from foodie nights to jitterbugging at the site disco is laid on in the evenings, at the snack bar which also dishes up fresh food made to order. For more of your French foodie essentials, fresh bread is delivered to the site every morning.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/05 and 31/08 (subject to weather conditions).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 15 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Adorable, family run site! 04/09/2018

The host at reception was very helpful and spoke English. She placed us on a pitch with a direct view of the bouncy castle so we could watch our kids with ease. The cafe/ restaurant had exactly what you needed and at a reasonable price. The staff were friendly and helpful. The site was cute, had adorable little wooden animals around the place and hammocks which amused the kids for a good hour.

    Disliked:

The toilets and shower facilities were dated and not cleaned to a high standard or frequently enough. The swimming pool wasn’t open due to a ‘hygiene’ situation but, this was thoroughly explained at check in (can’t comment on it as a facility as we didn’t use it).

Lovely clean site. Owners are extremely friendly and go out of their way to ensure you have everything that you need. Small site, which suited us, with a nice play park; bouncy castle and pool. You can order baguettes and croissants for breakfast and there are pizzas and other snacks available at night.

    Disliked:

Tents need updated. The bunk beds were quite uncomfortable, and the frames underneath the matttresses were badly bent.

From the manager...

About us: we are UK family with two children (10 and 12); we are new to camping and this was our first trip to France; we value our privacy when camping but also look for communal areas for our children; we tend not to favour crowded sites with lots of shops, activities and restaurants. About this site: We visited Les Tournesols for two nights in August 2018. the site is situated in the countrside a mile or so outside a pleasant town (with a Super U supermaket among other things). It's a cluster of 2-3 fields with trees set within some arable land. The pitches are a good size, level and nicely positioned to promote privacy. There's good shade from a avariety of decidous trees. There are two sets of washrooms; one has been recently rennovated but both are well maintained and cleaned. The reception area also has covered area for rainy days, a small cafe (selling pizzas, chips, beer, tea/coffee etc), and a wi-fi zone. dotted around the site are numerous activities from a bouncy castle to mini-golf, boules to a water slides. The owners are Dutch and speak excellent English; they work very hard and were welcoming and helpful. The site allows BBQs in your pitch.

    Disliked:

This is not a 'dislike' but it was busy. Booking would be advisable in the summer.

Clean and friendly campsite. Good shower and toilet facilities. Handy cafe selling pizzas, chips etc. Nice clean pool. Quite small but fine for the kids to play in while you watch them on the sun chairs. Close to a lovely lake beach, forest with walking and cycling as well as supermarket and restaurants. I would definitely stop there again.

    Disliked:

Rent a tent was rather basic. Could do with updating.

Quiet site. Great facilities, showers hot/powerful and private washrooms. Clean and well kept. Serves limited range of food, pizza, panini etc, at on-site eatery with both outdoor or under-cover eating area. Didn't use the small pool as only stayed for single night (twice) on our way to South and on way back again so well located for stop-over if arriving or leaving Calais - about 3.5-4 hr drive.
Food on site was quite expensive, €8 for a pizza, and accommodation in rental tent €40 per night which again isn't cheap but convenient way of breaking up journey and not having to erect own tent. However the rental tents are quite tired looking and in need of a spruce up or replacement. The Dutch owner took us by surprise a bit on our 2nd stop over by advising us that the tent 'isn't a hotel and shouldn't be treated as such'. The message was that the tent must be left as we found it which in itself isn't an issue for us other than the fact that the tent isn't that great (laminate flooring marked by damp, and scuffed at the edges, with the canvas having seen better days). We felt a bit put out by his tone and the inspection that has to take place before you're allowed to leave! Reminded me of being on school camp!
The nearby lake is beautiful and a fantastic place to walk (dog loved it although dogs are not allowed on the lake beach).
Great evening watching World Cup final with the French especially given their victory!

From the manager...

dear Alison, We are very surprised by your referencee. You came very late the first time and very early the second time and I think taht you were very weel welcomed by us or not ? The swimmingpool is not small, it is a small campsite and the swimmongpool has a good size for us. You didn't use it, but if you had the time ti use it, you will notice it was not too small... If you find a snack with a fresh pizza 33 cm cheaper tha 8 euros, give me the adress please... You do not precise that the sanitaire is renovated and beuatiful with a zen decoration. Everybody is very satisfied with it. You are right, the tent are not new. We have new tent but the dogs are not allowed in tyje new tents....At your departure you said you will maybe come back... .We had a very good feeling with you.. That is why we are very surprised with your referencee. If you had stay a couple of days you would surely had a better impression. We hope to see you again....Next time tell us directly what you think; laetitia & remond

Local attractions

The small fortified town of Sainte-Suzanne, on a rocky outcrop above the Erve river, is just under half an hour's drive from the site. This mighty pretty place has an 11th-century castle, ancient streets lined with handsome buildings, and a fine selection of shops, cafés and restaurants. The Musée d'Auditoire tells the tale of the town including its besieging by the men of William the Conqueror.

Le Mans 45 minutes away is also a must, for its splendid cathedral (even the kids should like a look at this) and its half-timbered houses from the 14th to 16th centuries. The most famed of these is the red-painted Maison du Pilier Rouge on Grand Rue, a good place to snap a scenic shot. If you're around in July or August, stick around into the evening for the Le Mans light show in the Old Town, a spectacular spectacle that should enthral all ages.

If you're a film buff, you might want to see how many movie settings you can spy around the city, such as that of Cyrano de Bergerac: see if you can nose out the right location.
