General

  • Friendly woodland site three kilometres from Sillé-le-Guillaum
  • A few minutes from a watersports lake and sandy beach
  • Snack bar with terrace, miniature golf, play area and bouncy castles

Strewth, this Sarthe site is rightly sorted for small types. Camping Les Tournesols is a properly family-friendly place, not only crammed with stuff for kids to get stuck into, but with a knowledgeable, welcoming team who'll happily assist on advising you on local destinations desirable for your own brand of munchkins. And if your parlez vous français isn't quite up to scratch? The necessary info can be imparted in anglais aussi.

Les Tournesols is a woodland site, a couple of kilometres from Sillé-le-Guillaume. Your small sorts will find loads to bounce around at on site (inflatables included, natch), but they'll clamour to get out and about too when they find out what's in the surroundings: a lake a few minutes' drive away has fishing, sailing, canoeing and kayaking, or you could just bask or build sandcastles at sandy Sillé beach. Woodland hikes are on your doorstep too, there are loads of walking and cycling routes in the region, and peaceful gardens galore are around Le Mans, the second greenest area in France.

Facilities on site include a heated pool, a miniature golf course, a play area and pétanque and volleyball courts. A free kids' club runs in high season.

Entertainment for all, from foodie nights to jitterbugging at the site disco is laid on in the evenings, at the snack bar which also dishes up fresh food made to order. For more of your French foodie essentials, fresh bread is delivered to the site every morning.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Lovely, private decked area. Great cooking facilities outside of the tent provided! The owner was very welcoming and friendly.

The campsite was extremely clean and great bathroom/shower facilities. Option to order morning bread and pastries was a lovely touch, as was the cafe to order food if you don't want to cook.

    Would definitely stay again!

Location was excellent and the facilities were clean and tidy. Owners were friendly and welcoming. The kids loved the swimming pool and bouncy castle!

    Disliked:

Very, very small accommodation for 6 in the 2 bed mobile home with uncomfortable beds. Actually left 2 days early to stay somewhere with more space. We were also informed we had to clean everything before we left and this was inspected before our deposit was returned. There was no mention of this when we booked so we’re a little surprised.

Very friendly helpful owners.we paid extra for a large pitch which we got plenty of room .sanitary facilities were clean and not overstretched.
We enjoyed an evening meal as a get together with other campers organised by owners.
We picked up an information sheet at reception which gave details of a circular drive and what to see which was useful.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately the weather wasn’t wonderful during our stay and the grass on our pitch was a little bit long which made for wet feet. The overall impression was that the site had been well laid out with bushes and trees etc but would benefit from some loving care from a gardener.
There were some problems with loss of electric during our stay which was a nuisance but the owner came immediately each time and tried his best to rectify the problem..The access to pitches is quite tight for larger outfits but just needs extra care.

From the manager...

Cosy and friendly, with plenty to do. The pool was the right size for small children, and nice and warm too. We liked the people at the campsite, lots of very friendly campers. The bouncy castle was something fun to do for the kids, and they LOVED the hammocks too. The owners told us about a local fayre which we enjoyed and was a very typical French thing to experience. All very affordable, with morning coffees and croissants available for people like us who didn't have the equipment for much breakfast cooking or hot drinks. We had a great stay.

From the manager...

Dear Sir, thank you for your stay and for the exceptional rating of 10/10 that you give to our CUSTOMER SERVICE. We do our best for you.
We don’t understand why you put 4/10 in cleanliness when you say in your comment that the site was clean, why 2/10 to wifi, we remind that the FREE WIFI access point is close to the reception and you can settle in the Barnum to consult internet and you could also choose a pitch near this WIFI point if this was so important for you.... With regard to sanitary, we have two sanitary blocks, one was renovated last year in a zen decoration and the second will be redone next year but it is always clean. We could close the oldest of the two in low season but we leave it open for those who have a pitch close to it. You could have taken a pitch close to the first one that was renovated with the WIFI point near it. Sincerely, Laetitia & Remond

Local attractions

The small fortified town of Sainte-Suzanne, on a rocky outcrop above the Erve river, is just under half an hour's drive from the site. This mighty pretty place has an 11th-century castle, ancient streets lined with handsome buildings, and a fine selection of shops, cafés and restaurants. The Musée d'Auditoire tells the tale of the town including its besieging by the men of William the Conqueror.

Le Mans, 45 minutes away, is also a must, for its splendid cathedral (even the kids should like a look at this) and its half-timbered houses from the 14th to 16th centuries. The most famed of these is the red-painted Maison du Pilier Rouge on Grand Rue, a good place to snap a scenic shot. If you're around in July or August, stick around into the evening for the Le Mans light show in the Old Town, a spectacular spectacle that should enthral all ages.

If you're a film buff, you might want to see how many movie settings you can spy around the city, such as that of Cyrano de Bergerac: see if you can nose out the right location.
