  • Peaceful and shaded site next door to a public fishing lake and park
  • Within walking distance of the town centre and an aquatic centre
  • Play area, games room, bikes to borrow and entertainment organised
If you’re not swayed by the tree-filled setting next door to a public lake, or the topnotch facilities ranging from a kids’ playground to a cosy common room, the freebies are sure to get you on board at Camping du Mûrier – the owners will chuck in a fair few extras for guests staying at this site, including bikes for cycling the nearby greenway, a half-day fishing trip and a welcome drink on Mondays. Depending on how long you’re staying put at this Pays de la Loire place, you could also get discounts on entry to the aquatic centre less than 10 minutes away on foot; other amenities and attractions in the flower-covered town of Craon are a cinch to reach too, including the grand castle and hiking trails. Back at the site after ambles and ready to rest? Forget about it – there’s just too much to take part in at this park, from table tennis and table football to board games and pétanque (and there’s also an outdoor play area for the kids). If you really are craving a chillout, a TV’s in the communal area and relaxed social activities like group picnics and barbecues are organised one night a week (in July and August). Sheets and towels are for hire at this park – great if your car boot’s brimming with too much stuff – and ice cream and cold drinks are sold on site.

Local attractions

First things first: get over to the public lake a couple of minutes’ walk away from the site – it's aimed at anglers but appreciated by wanderers too, as there’s a park next to its banks for pottering about. It also has fitness equipment set up on the side for a workout with a view, and watersports are available in the summer months. Less than 10 minutes’ walk from here, Craon Castle and its sprawling gardens are a must-visit, as are the limestone houses and wooden halls in the town’s historic centre just off the Oudon river. Drop by the Ferme du Pressoir factory, another 10-minute walk in the opposite direction, for tours of the craft cider production facility, then drive for 15 minutes to Cossé-le-Vivien, to check out the Museum Robert Tatin’s mythical-themed sculptures set in gorgeous gardens. Stay outdoors with a trip to Château-Gontier, 20 minutes away, to wander the towpaths by the Mayenne river or admire the animals in the sanctuary; a little further are a couple of out-of-the-ordinary sights: the old slate mine in Noyant-la-Gravoyère (25 minutes) and the Lactopôle milk museum (35 minutes).
