  • Welcoming family-friendly site 10 minutes from Doué-la-Fontaine
  • Surrounded by vineyards and close to gardens, châteaux and a zoo
  • Heated swimming pool and paddling pool kept to at least 28ºC
As you can tell from the name, Camping La Vallée des Vignes is... surrounded by vineyards and wineries. But it’s not just the Anjou rosé keeping folks occupied around these parts – there are also days spent around rose gardens, poking about in troglodyte caves, and working one’s way down the long list of châteaux within an hour’s drive. And it’s not just the local attractions that have inspired previous guests to rave about the Vallée des Vignes experience (‘our favourite campsite of our three-week tour around France’, says one). The warm welcome is a good start, but then there’s also the warm waters of the swimming pool and paddling pool – no cautious toe-dipping required here as pools are heated to a minimum of 28ºC at all times. Games of volleyball, miniature golf, table tennis and pétanque keep active types out of trouble, while quieter sorts can set up for an afternoon of river fishing or amble off to the little library to select from the collections of books and board games. For food, order bread and croissants the night before for delivery the next day, pick up essentials in the mini market, or have an evening in the restaurant for local specialities and familiar dishes.

Local attractions

Rosé and roses – if you’re fond of these two, you’re in the right place. The pink plonk is perhaps the best known produce of the local wineries but in fact there are reds, white, sparklers and liqueurs to sample too as you tour round them. The several producers within a few kilometres of the site make for a particularly pleasing day of cycling and sipping (hire bikes from the site if you’ve not brought them). Doué-la-Fontaine (10 minutes away by car) calls itself the Rose Capital of France and with good reason – some seven million rose bushes are cultivated around here. There’s a rose museum and some gorgeous gardens to visit, but perhaps the best way to view the blooms is to wander on the rose trail at Les Chemins de la rose, a four-hectare park with over 1,000 varieties to admire. Also in Doué-la-Fontaine is a superb zoo, thought to be the world’s only troglodyte zoo, where monkeys, big cats, birds and others live in and around the caves and remains of a rock quarry. There’s a château in Saumur, half an hour away, and while you’re there you can take in a balletic riding display at the Cadre Noir riding academy, paddle canoes along the Loire and call into the local wineries to explore the sprawling underground cellars and sample sparkling wines.
