  • Vineyard site on the estate surrounding Château de Brissac
  • A 25-minute drive to Angers, 35 to Saumur and 55 to Puy du Fou
  • Well-maintained grounds with pools, summer bar and its own wine
A Loire Valley château and a Loire Valley vineyard: well now, that's just Loire Valley perfection. And with free wine tastings too: well now, that's just Loire Valley long holidays and hiding from the boss for a number of weeks. This Loire Valley lushness is at the splendid little site of Domaine de l'Étang, in Brissac-Quincé and the Maine-et-Loire department and between Angers and Saumur. Set among the Anjou vineyards, the site covers more than three hectares around the former farmhouse of the Château de Brissac, and produces its own wine from the estate – which you can sample (gratis) at the Domaine de l'Étang shop. The team prides itself on going the extra mile to make stays as comfy as possible, keeping the whole place immaculately maintained and ensuring that pitch numbers are kept low so all guests have plenty of room. There's great care taken too so that the site blends in with its natural surroundings: if you want to pitch up among peaceful greenery, this is the spot for you. You can be as active or as laidback as you like here: there are plenty of on-site activities to plunge into should you so wish, and a fine aquatic area with outdoor pool and covered/heated pool for something more sedate. A leisure park in front of the site has discounts for Domaine de l'Étang guests. A bar with terrace is open in July and August for drinks and snacks, and reception sells essentials, local produce, bread and pastries. Brissac-Quincé is a couple of kilometres away.

Local attractions

Château de Brissac first, most likely: this 11th-century château was once the tallest in all France, and is the tallest in the Loire Valley even in these modern times (seven storeys high, should you be wondering). It's still owned by the Cossé-Brissac family, who open it for public tours and the annual Val de Loire festival in its smashingly swish gilt theatre (yes, they have their own theatre…). Fans of enviable old piles should also take the 50-minute trip east to Fontevraud Abbey, the 11th-century monastery where Henry 2, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart were buried (as the kids will no doubt be able to tell you, but surely they'll love you to test their knowledge when there). The abbey's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site; check out the Centre Culturel de l'Ouest at the entrance too. Other spectacular old destinations nearby include Angers, 25 minutes' drive away, and Saumur within 35. And if les enfants are now revolting at all these cultural days? Entice them along to the theme park of Puy du Fou (55 minutes' drive): it may be history-themed, but even the most reluctant small sort will have an absolute hoot.
