  • Peaceful, family-friendly site in southern France’s Tarn department
  • Rent canoes or swim in the river Viaur; hiking trails start on site
  • Kids' playground, pool and snack bar with themed evenings all on site
For stays heavy on watersports, plonk yourself down in the forest next to the river Viaur at Les Terrasses du Viaur, just outside Pampelonne and near the border with Aveyron. Where better to start your Tarn area adventures than at the Viaur itself? The site rents out canoes for explores on the water, or you can ditch the boats altogether and go straight in for a dip. If you can’t pluck up the courage for that, the riverbank is also a gorgeous spot to chill out for the day or to try your luck with some fishing. If you do fancy a splash, but you prefer to do it in the comfort of a pool, there’s one of those on site, too, as well as a playground for the nippers. When the watery action dries up, it’s time to delve into the Viaur valley. You don’t have to go far to get started; a bunch of hiking trails leave directly from the site and you can grab a map of the routes from reception on your way out to help with the navigating. For your meals, head to the campsite snack bar which offers homemade pizza, fries, local charcuterie (every day except Monday) and cocktails. If you plan to stay on the campsite after dark, theme evenings are organised. The site is stacked with handy stuff like free wifi for planning explores and a launderette to freshen up your gear post-hike, along with showers, toilets and a washing-up area.

Liked: The location and gorge are beautiful. Pitches are generous size and shaded. Facilities were clean.

Disliked: We didn't end up staying as we were so disappointed with the facilities when we arrived. The description is not accurate. The swimming pool is so small that not even our whole family could have fitted (approx. 3m x 2m). The river beach is paddling only not deep enough to swim and the water wasn't flowing so not as clear as other parts of the river where we have swam. Also the beach was used by dog owners and messy. The owners still took £80 from us - despite that we only booked the day before and they had lots of empty pitches.

From the manager: Good morning, to respond to your review. our swimming pool is 6m/3m it is not an Olympic swimming pool but I assure you that even several families can enjoy it. For the beach by the river in front of the campsite, it is not private and therefore open from 9 am to 10 pm to local people. there are large swimming areas in the river 20m from the campsite, you didn't take the time to discover them, that's a shame! for the color of the river it is an untreated natural space, so indeed the water is not translucent, it is the viaur... finally our campsite has cancellation conditions like everyone else. for a cancellation at least 7 days before arrival, the entire stay is not refunded. I did not apply my conditions and I think I have refunded you sir more than half of the total amount of your stay. Having free places does not justify the non-reimbursement of part of the stay. Too bad you didn't take the time to find out more about us.
