  • Large site on the river Lot in Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park
  • Pech Merle caves 15 minutes’ drive; Cahors 35 minutes
  • Trampolines and ping-pong tables; canoe hire; organised entertainment
Right on the banks of the Lot, family-friendly Camping de La Plage occupies a three-hectare site a five-minute drive (or a 25-minute walk) from Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, a medieval village (voted one of the most beautiful in France) dramatically clinging to rocky cliffs along the river. And if that’s not enough to get you clicking the ‘Book now’ button, how’s this for a draw? Camping de La Plage is also in the heart of the Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park, which features a network of hiking and cycling trails, plus geological sites like the caves of Pech Merle (15 minutes’ drive), known for their remarkable prehistoric art. Not forgetting the local gastronomy, which includes home-grown products like walnuts, truffles and saffron. And any dishes you sample around here, you can wash down with a nice glass of wine from the nearby Cahors region. The secure site is well equipped, with a launderette and a drying room in addition to a heated toilet and shower block (with facilities for disabled guests), plus a room with books and games. If the kids are less into reading and more into physical activities, there’s a playground with trampolines and inflatables, as well as ping-pong tables and a volleyball court. And, of course, there’s the river Lot itself, where you can swim and splash around safely. You can also explore the riverside landscape by hiring pedalos and canoes from the site. During the summer months the site also arranges entertaining activities such as sports tournaments, organised walks, and comedy and dancing soirées.

Local attractions

Cahors (35 minutes’ drive) is known for its vineyards; you can sample (and buy) the local offerings at a number of nearby wineries. Cross the river Lot by walking on the stone Valentré Bridge, which dates from the 1300s, then visit the Romanesque Cathédrale Saint-Etienne, with its two vast domes, one of them decorated with frescoes. The hilltop village of Rocamadour (one hour and 10 minutes), in the Dordogne Valley, clings to steep rocks on the river L’Alzou. It’s a popular pilgrimage site thanks to its location on the Way of St James, and splendid religious buildings include the Sanctuaire Notre-Dame, home to a Black Madonna statue. In the northern reaches of Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park, Gouffre de Padirac (one hour and 15 minutes) is a vast, deep cave with an underground river (that you can sail on) that leads to two subterranean lakes surrounded by natural rock formations.
