  • Laidback family site with stunning Pyrénées views at Luz-Saint-Sauveur
  • Cirque de Gavarnie and the Col du Tourmalet both 35 minutes’ drive
  • Informal bar and summer bread delivery service; hikes from the pitches
Close to the gateway of the Pyrénées National Park and on the outskirts of the alpine village of Luz-Saint-Sauveur, Camping Le Hounta is a longstanding site with more than 60 years of welcoming guests to one of the most scenic spots in the Pyrénées. You can look forward to waking up to mountain views, listening to birdsong and falling asleep to the sound of the stream running alongside the site; you’ll soon discover why generations of guests keep coming back, year after year. This place has been managed by the same family since its inception, and it's small, chilled and wonderfully unspoiled. If you’re chasing organised activities and night-time entertainment, this is not the spot for you. On the other hand, if you’re a hiker, cyclist or a family simply seeking French mountain hospitality, quiet surroundings and fresh mountain air, everything you need is here. Go canyoning on the mountain rivers, spot marmots and lizards on the hiking trails or sample local produce at the Monday market. The site has shower blocks with disabled- and family-accessible rooms and a useful laundry room. You can try your hand at pétanque, ping pong or table football, and borrow books and tourist maps from reception, where alcoholic and soft drinks are sold; there’s bread delivery in summer too.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Peaceful site by the river. Camille was very helpful, suggesting places to visit. She even brought is a bucket of hand picked cherries on our last night there. Facilities immaculate and the nicest showers of all the sites we visited whilst on our 3 week tour of France. Easy to walk into Luz for a meal or a drink in the evening.

Local attractions

Sitting on the crossroads of the Luz, Barèges and Gavarnie valleys, Camping Le Hounta is a handy base camp for exploring the Hautes-Pyrénées. Day trips await in every direction: the glacier-carved Cirque de Gavarnie (35 minutes’ drive), the legendary Pic du Midi Observatory (50 minutes) with its world-renowned stargazing and the notorious Col du Tourmalet (35 minutes) – a challenging route for cyclists. In summer, the ski resorts of Luz Ardiden (25 minutes) and Grand Tourmalet (45 minutes) come into their own with hiking, mountain biking and marmot-spotting in the alpine meadows. If your holiday dates coincide, the Tour de France also passes through the famous Col du Tourmalet every year in July. The spa town of Cauterets has a dramatic setting on the fast-flowing Gave de Cauterets River, and you can also make a pilgrimage to Lourdes (both half an hour) to visit the impressive basilica and sanctuary.
