  • Tipi glamping among stunning scenery in the Pyrénées National Park
  • 3km from UNESCO-listed Cirque de Gavarnie, via the Camino de Santiago
  • Cosy communal cottage with kitchen, seating and TV/DVD lounge
What an absolute stunner. This tiptop place is Tipis Nature in the Hautes-Pyrénées, a glamping site among spectacular scenery (do, immediately, see pics), with first-rate facilities, mighty impressive accommodation and world-famed destinations close by. Make your camp here for some time – you'll need it. The tipis are in traditional Native American style, sleeping up to four fortunate souls in a splendidly decorated space with table and chairs, electrical outlets, lamp lighting and a kitchen corner with a double-ring gas stove and kit for prepping cuisine. All have access to the site's dry toilet tipi, and to the shower tipi with two bathrooms, shower cabins, sinks, toilets and radiators for towel drying. A communal cottage with a well-equipped kitchen as well as a large lounge room with heating, TV and a DVD player is also on site. You'll be arriving back at this lush base from days out among excellent options aplenty: Tipis Nature's location in the Pyrénées National Park and near the mountain town of Gavarnie-Gèdre is three kilometres from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Cirque de Gavarnie, the mammoth beauty hailed as 'the Colosseum of nature' by one Victor Hugo. It's also a short drive from here to the Gavernie Falls (the second highest waterfall in Europe, cascade connoisseurs), and to sports of all sorts in Gèdre and the Luz valley. The Camino de Santiago or St James's Way is within walking distance. Access to the mountain path is within 200 metres if you'd prefer to stay even closer to your tipi retreat: look again at those pics and this may well be your top pick.

Local attractions

Climb up to the small cave of Trabés (Virgin of Trabés) and its old watermill from the site just to get started, then – so much a must – hike to the Plateau de Saugué for a jaw-dropping view of the Cirque de Gavarnie, via the world-famed pilgrimage path of St James's Way. More hiking and clambering options are around the Cirque d'Estaubé, four kilometres from the Cirque de Gavarnie, and Brèche de Roland or Roland's Breach 35 minutes' drive away, climbing for about an hour from the Refugio Sarradets mountain refuge hut. Cyclists should tackle the Cirque de Troumouse from Gèdre, one of the most famed routes in the Pyrénées National Park. A pool, ice rink, tennis courts and indoor climbing are at Gèdre, under five minutes' drive away; book Cirque de Gavarnie horse or donkey rides in summer at Gavernie about 15 minutes away.
