If you plan on taking a bash at climbing the Pic du Pibeste, it's a mighty sensible plan to combine it with a stay at nearby Camping Le Soleil du Pibeste – the extensive facilities on site here should help soothe any post-hike aches and pains. This site is in Agos-Vidalos, just outside the Pyrénées National Park, so there’s plenty more hiking (and all sorts of other outdoorsy activities) to be done once you’ve ticked off the Pic du Pibeste/taken a look at it and decided to opt for something involving less scrambling. Once you're done with whatever muscle-testing activity you selected, head back to base for all sorts of rest, relaxation and recuperation. Take a dip in the outdoor swimming pool or Jacuzzi (both come with gorgeous mountain views to admire while you soak), or opt for a much-needed massage. Those aiming to dial down the pace even more can sign up for tai Chi, qigong, yoga and meditation. Keep your energy levels up with a visit to the on-site restaurant, which dishes up a tasty assortment of pizzas, tapas and raclette, as well as homegrown veggies. You can also get your hands on organic food, beer and wine (and other supplies) at the on-site shop. Elsewhere on site, there's a playground for the kids and some fitness equipment to help you keep in shape for all of those hikes… plus free wifi to aid with route planning so you don't go astray along the way.

Local attractions

For a change of pace from uphill mountain climbs, a visit to Parc Chloro’fil (five-minute drive) comes with all sorts of forest fun, including ziplining, treetop walks and watersports like rafting and kayaking. Or go underground for a tour of the Grottes de Bétharram caves (half an hour). If you haven’t had any great wildlife spots on your wanders, you can rectify that at the Animal Park of the Pyrenees (five minutes) or Asson Zoo (40 minutes). There’s also a kid-friendly farm, Ferme du Bon'Air, 20 minutes away. The site is a mere 10 minutes from Lourdes, so join the pilgrims for a visit to the impressive Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes and Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, and get a good dose of the Lourdes healing water while you’re there. Lourdes is also home to the Musée du Petit Lourdes (a miniature reconstruction of the town) and a wax museum, Musée de Cire. Slightly further afield, there’s another museum in the Château de Pau (50 minutes) – it’s dedicated to Henri IV and houses a collection of 17th- and 18th-century tapestries.
