  • Family-friendly camping with a Pyrénées view in the Haute-Garonne
  • A half-hour’s drive to Caves of Gargas and Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges
  • Swimming pool in summer; fishing pond, pétanque and bakery on site
At the crossroads of the Hautes-Pyrénées and Gers in quiet countryside, Camping Lac Saint-Georges is a family-run and dog-friendly concern with a small number of grass, lakeside pitches well-shaded by mature trees and set in two hectares of private land with views to the Pyrénées mountains. This is a smashing base for families looking to explore the Haute-Garonne region – ideally located in Sarrecave, a small village surrounded by a landscape of plains, hills and mountains. From there, you can explore on horseback (there’s a riding stable just five-minutes’ walk away), on foot in the state forest of Cardeilhac (15 minutes’ drive), by mountain bike or in a car – and in winter there are four ski resorts in the Pyrénées within an hour’s drive. And there’s plenty to keep everybody happy on site as well. For starters, there’s a swimming pool (open in summer) and a kids’ playground as well as a pétanque court and access to tennis courts and football fields. You can play table tennis and table football, try your hand at bowling or practise casting on the fishing lake. No need to go too far to pick up daily essentials either, as there’s a lakeside snack bar as well as a bakery and a small grocery shop on site.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: We stayed here for 4 nights with our children (7 and 10 years old) and absolutely loved this campsite. It is a lovely area in France with loads to do we went to the aquaparc in Montrejeau, the Grottes des Gargas and Canoeing with Canoeing En Gascogne which were all great activities. The owners of the campsite are so hospitable and friendly. It’s quiet and really relaxed with nice shady pitches. The pool is fabulous - large, clean and cool with great seating to relax and sunbath. There is a tennis court and table tennis table with bats and balls available to use. There is a little bar where you can sit and look over the lake with a chilled drink and if you choose to you can book a table to eat in the evening where your hosts will provide you with a home cooked meal serving up some local produce. As some previous reviews have stated, the toilet block is a little dated, but it was always clean and everything worked as well as needed so this was no problem at all. The fact that things are not brand new and modern adds to the charm of this place and the relaxed atmosphere. We loved it and would definitely return if we are ever in the area again.

Liked: Beautiful grassy pitch. Small site. Very peaceful. Amazing pool. Friendly amenable hosts.

Disliked: WiFi only available near reception. Carefully plan your route as there are some very small windy hilly roads. There are easier access roads.

From the manager: We really appreciate your taking the time to give us your comments. We are fortunate to have customers like you and look forward to serving you in the future! As for the wifi, it is accessible for free around the reception where there are tables, chairs and sockets necessary for our travelers to settle down and work properly. Just ask us the code. The installation of high-performance and quality hotsptots throughout the holiday village would make this service a paid service.Too few of our customers still ask us for it, but this is one of our possible approaches for the future. Best Regards, Elisabeth Rolo

Liked: The owner was very hospitable.

Disliked: The site is so run down, about 1970 it would have been lovely. The sanitaires were very old and inadequate. There were mouse droppings on the floor in one of the toilets. They were cleaned the next day. The pedalo in the 'lake' looked as if it was sinking. We did wonder if they were new owners as new static lodges were being installed. The pool looked inviting but when I looked in it there were baby frogs!! To top it all as we were relaxing a feral cat came into our camper it looked a sad little thing as it was losing its eye through a nasty infection. Later in the evening we had 4 little cats sitting by the door, one on our step!. All in all if they spent a few hundred euros on facilities it would be acceptable, but I think their main prerogative seems to be their mobile homes.

From the manager: We bought out the holiday village in 2019 and with Covid have slowed down investment. Since you came, we’ve been redoing the bathroom. We do not use raticide, nor pesticide, which is why mice like to live in the sanitary area during the winter, since we are open all year round the heat of the water heater attracts them. The toilets are cleaned once a day in low season and up to 3 times in high season. The holiday village is home to flora and fauna, including amphibians (frogs), which are often threatened. Toads, frogs, newts and salamanders flourish on the camping especially attractive because of the diversity of natural spaces. I’m sorry you had to come in the middle of transforming the nipples into frogs. We love seeing baby frogs and we can’t stop them from going in the pool! Our holiday village is located in the countryside and therefore there are many stray cats. I am disappointed to have such a comment with a rating of 2/10 for a stay that lasted only one night....

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. Because your satisfaction and comfort are at the heart of our priorities and in order to continuously improve the quality of our services, we take into account your opinion in order to perfect us and to best meet your requests and needs. Nevertheless, I think the price for a campsite of 27, 44 € / night is suitable for a family of 5 people (couple with 3 children of 6, 4 and 4 years) electricity included, access to sanitary facilities with hot shower included and tourist tax included. The outdoor pool is closed in winter and we apologize for that. It was still snowing a few days ago. On the campsite there are swings, slides and a trampoline . For adults, a tennis court and 2 ping pong table are available all year round. Board games can also be booked for free at the reception. In a single night, it is difficult to discover all this. We will be happy to receive you again with the sun and for a minimum of 2 nights. Best Regards. Elisabeth

Liked: Fabulous setting with the Pyrenees in the background. Lovely hostess who greeted me and answered my questions. Local products available to buy. The owner helped me park and then found a walk for me to do. Some good routes in the area of varying difficulty and distance. The campsite was peaceful and with many activities available if wanted.

Local attractions

Learn about local culture and heritage at the Villa Gallo-Romaine de Montmaurin (10 minutes’ drive) or head right back in time to the Caves of Gargas (half an hour), believed to be the dwelling place of Homo-sapiens families some 27,000 years ago, and adorned with hundreds of wall paintings of hands. The dramatic Gorges de la Save (10 minutes) is a natural wonder with steep cliffs only explorable on foot, while the flower displays in the Gardens of Poterie Hillen (20 minutes) make another lovely spot for quiet walks among Italianate-style gardens. Protected by rows of majestic trees, the Château de Valmirande (25 minutes) is open for tours of its landscaped parkland in summer. Pretty villages abound in this corner of the Haute-Garonne, with Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges (half an hour) being a popular medieval stop overlooked by its magnificent, hilltop Cathédrale Sainte-Marie. Saint-Gaudens (25 minutes) sits on the fabled Camino de Santiago (the Way of Saint James) pilgrimage route, and is dominated by its vast Romanesque Church of Saint-Pierre, built in medieval times.
