  • Smart and self-contained accommodation on a historic Gers estate
  • A 10-minute drive from Condom; 45 minutes from Agen
  • Heated outdoor pool, tennis court, bike rental and play area
When looking for a self-catered outdoor stay in the south of France, a couple of things are pretty sure to be high on your wishlist. You're bound to want plenty of space – either for kids to cavort in or for old romantics to settle in for stargazing – and most likely you'll also be after a peaceful pool for easy dips and waterside chillouts. Domaine de la Brette ticks all those boxes with brio, and has a few 18th- and 19th-century stone buildings dotted around the place for good measure. All of the units at this 4.5-hectare estate have been set up for maximum privacy and to take advantage of the uninterrupted rural views (vistas best viewed from the unit's high-end wooden decking). A short stroll away through the leafy grounds are the tennis court, table tennis tables, a kids' playground and that pool – cue fantasies of dozing on sun loungers shaded by slowly swaying trees… Despite the domaine's secluded location, exploring away from site is far from a strain – bikes can be dropped off at Domaine de la Brette by a local hire company and collected again at the end of the day, and there are plenty of quiet lanes to pedal along through the neighbouring fields and along the Petite Baïse river. Condom (10 minutes' drive), which is also on the river, has full-sized supermarkets, top-quality dining and brilliantly boozy exhibits on show at the Musée de l'Armagnac.

Local attractions

Can you visit vineyards around here? You betcha you can – the question around these parts isn't so much 'where' as 'where do I start'? If you're made of sturdy stuff, stroll half a kilometre over to Le Château le Courrejot, where you can sip locally-produced armagnac almost straight from the still. There's also the hand-crushed wine on sale at the Domaine de Pouypardin (10 minutes' drive), as well as the Domaine de Magnaut (20 minutes), where reds, whites and rosés all require a thorough sampling. Need something to clear your head? An early-morning coffee in the gorgeous riverside town of Nérac (15 minutes) should perk you up and awaken your senses to its medieval and renaissance architecture. Les Jardins de Coursiana (20 minutes), a botanical garden stuffed with some of the finest flora around, is another prime pick for restorative rambles. History hunters will be well-served throughout the region, whether heading to the regal Roman ruins at Éauze (35 minutes), Agen's far-famed 12th-century cathedral (45 minutes) or riverside Flaran Abbey (20 minutes).
