  • Well-equipped bell tents among the trees at a laidback Limousin site
  • A 15-minute drive to Oradour-sur-Glane; Limoges 25 minutes
  • Fishing lake, hot tub, playground, pétanque and bar on site
Dipping your toes into the outdoor lifestyle but without any need to bring or set up a tent? Take yourselves along to Camping Sous Les Belles Étoiles, in a lovely part of the Limousin countryside, where bell tents have been set up in shaded woodland spots for a cool and comfortable alfresco break. Five minutes' drive from Peyrilhac (home of the nearest shop) and just under half an hour’s drive from Limoges, this is a gorgeous natural spot where you can unwind with things like woodland walks or fishing at the on-site lake. A pétanque court is on hand for a bit of friendly rivalry, and there’s also a bar where any on-court disputes can be settled later on. Relaxation is to the fore at this laidback glamping site – hammocks have been strung in the trees for somewhere nice to have a snooze, and there’s a wood-fired hot tub where you can soak all your everyday stresses away. If the kids are less enthusiastic about quiet chillout time they can run around at the play area or scamper through the woods for a while. There’s also space for games of football and badminton if more organised activity appeals. The bell tents at this site have been set up to make life easy for guests – each one has beds, bedding, towels, lighting and firewood provided, plus access to shared facilities including a kitchen and a picnic/barbecue area. Each tent also has its own lockable toilet and shower in the bathroom block.

Local attractions

There’s a real atmosphere of traditional rural France in this area, and a couple of good places to soak that up include the pretty villages of Mortemart (25 minutes’ drive) and Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat (40 minutes), both full of well-preserved historic architecture. If you’re interested in traditional crafts, pop into the Musée du chanvre et de la ganterie (half an hour) to learn about traditional glove-making before heading on to Limoges (25 minutes), a well-known centre of excellence for porcelain making. There's history of a different (and more sombre) kind at Oradour-sur-Glane (15 minutes), preserved as a memorial after the village was destroyed in a World War II massacre. If you’ve got kids to entertain, the likes of Feeriland amusement park (15 minutes) and the treetop trails of Tarz en Arbre (20 minutes) should be on your radar; there are also lots of land- and water-based activities at Lac de Saint-Pardoux (20 minutes), along with a couple of lake beaches for chillout time.
