There’s an artistic flourish to this flower-filled site in Limousin, from the name to the place you wash your pots and pans. You can’t say La Toile Sous Les Étoiles (Canvas Under The Stars) without sounding a bit poetic and without thinking of all those creative weavers who made this part of France world famous... The clever team behind this fab site five minutes’ drive from Auzances have used a broad palette, picking up little bits of the past from wooden buckets to vintage frames to give even the most functional parts a decorative dash. Guests have access to their own elegant bathrooms for the duration of their stay, all housed in an ancient barn. Another old farm building has been turned into a communal space with a range cooker and an oven for making bread and pizzas, as well as housing individual fridges for guests. Back on your spot in the wide meadow, you’ll have a coolbox to keep your milk fresh for a morning cuppa, and the option of a gas ring or a fire bowl for kettle boiling and alfresco feasts. The communal firepit makes a handy hub for gatherings after dark; and when the sun’s high in the sky, the pool is on hand for waterside lounging and refreshing dips.

Local attractions

Auzances is five minutes' drive away, a small village with all the amenities of a small city: three bakeries, butcher, supermarket, pharmacy plus various eateries and bars. It’s 40 minutes from the site to Aubusson, a UNESCO-listed heritage site due to its long association with fine tapestries stretching back to the 15th century. There’s a pair of museums devoted to the industry, plus workshops and galleries all over the town, and plenty of opportunities to spend more than you should on a rug. The town’s Aquasud indoor pool complex is to hand for a relaxing finale or interlude, with slides, a spa and a Turkish hammam: lose yourself in the steam and stop thinking about how much you spent... For outdoor antics, advance on Sioule (50 minutes), a leisure activity centre amid the forested gorges of the Massif central with hikes and bike trails (hire electric ones for an easy ride uphill), canoeing and kayaking the Sioule river, swimming and fishing. There's more of this classic combo to be found, and on a grander scale, at the thickly forested Lac de Vassivière, an hour and 15 minutes away with beaches, zipwires and laser tag.
