  • Quiet family-owned Pyréneés-Orientales site on the side of a river
  • A 10-minute drive to Amélie-les-Bains and 45 minutes to the coast
  • Trout fishing in the river on site; cycling and hiking trails nearby
Forget about the craft markets and shops of the Pyréneés-Orientales for now… Camping Riuferrer in Arles-sur-Tech should be the first thing in your basket. This site, which stretches out over two and a half acres, has been open since 1966 during which time it was handed over from the Larreur family to the large Riuferrer family. A growing number of regulars like to meet there for holidays in the lush vegetation, and it's plain to see why… The team is very passionate about service, and nature too. Owners Hervé, Gina, Delphine and Laurent have continued in the spirit of the former owners, who planted the existing trees one by one. The area is in a residential area away from the roads, so nights are calm and quiet. There’s no need to break the peaceful stint anytime soon, as the river running through the site is stocked with trout and there are numerous cycling and hiking trails in the local area. If you prefer being in the water, there’s a swimming pool five minutes’ walk away from the site (with free entry) and a thermal spa with mud baths among the cobbles of Amélie-les-Bains, 10 minutes’ drive away. The craft markets and shops of the Pyréneés-Orientales (some modern, and some not) are also waiting their turn. The coastal towns, which are between a 45-minute and an hour’s drive of the site, are a dream for watersports, like kitesurfing, windsurfing and waterskiing. Closer by, there’s a tree climbing site with zipwires five minutes’ drive away.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Beautiful view of the Pyrenees. With a wonderful walk you can do from the campsite. Facilities are basic but clean. The pitch we had was generous in size a very flat. It is worth looking around as they do vary in size.

Disliked: The pool is great but it is not part of the campsite - it is a municipal pool which means that opening hours are different to a campsite pool and it shuts for lunch, But it was massive and clean.

Local attractions

To the coast? Collioure (50 minutes’ drive), so say the owners, is the ‘jewel’ of the Pyréneés-Orientales coast. Crafts shops are in full supply here. Just as riveting are the historical sites, which include the bell tower of a 17th-century cathedral (formerly a lighthouse) and a huge royal castle. For young people (and those young at heart, of course), nothing beats Argelès-sur-Mer (45 minutes) for nightclubs, crowds, bathing in the sea and shopping. The Catalan-style old town also has a healthy share of historical sites. On the windier beaches of the coast, get in some kitesurfing, windsurfing and parasailing practice. In Le Barcarès (an hour) in particular, there’s a waterskiing lift, as well as rental for canoes, jet skis and boats. If you prefer the pool to the beach, waste no time in getting to Aqualand Saint Cyprien (55 minutes), which has slides, a wave pool and a lazy river. There’s also an artificial canyoning park in Argelès-sur-Mer (45 minutes).
