  • Quiet family site in woodland near Les Aires in Languedoc-Roussillon
  • Five minutes’ drive Lamalou-les-Bains; Passa Païs greenway 15 minutes
  • Swimming pool and restaurant on site; shops five minutes’ drive
What a lovely spot… and indeed what a peaceful spot. Tucked in between centuries-old trees in the Orb Valley, the large pitches at Camping Domaine de Gatinié (some shaded, some not… take your pick) sit high above the Orb river near the historic village of Les Aires in the Haut-Languedoc area of south-west France. Covering five hectares of woodland, the site has a distinctly chilled vibe, with a bunch of low-key facilities to keep families entertained and happy. The unheated swimming pool for dips and a paddling pool for toddlers should both get everybody moving, and parents can keep watch over their offspring from the sun terrace. Kids can also have a jump around on the bouncy castle and a run about in the playground, or bash a ball across the ping-pong table (bats and balls available on site). Table football will keep teens busy for a while and if they want to stay in touch with mates back home, there’s wifi at reception (coverage is minimal elsewhere on the site). Pick up bits and bobs for picnics in Les Aires (five minutes’ drive); if you fancy a break from self-catering, hotfoot it to the terrace restaurant for classic French dishes and kid-pleasing burgers and chips.

Local attractions

On days when nothing but pampering spa treatments will do, take the shuttle service to Lamalou-les-Bains (five minutes’ drive) for facials and massages, or if you’re feeling a bit more lively, join in with aqua-aerobics sessions in the indoor pool. Ready for outdoorsy action? Domaine de Gatinié is the gateway to hiking and horse riding adventures in the Espinouse Massif (10 minutes’ drive to stables). Go kayaking down the Orb river (half an hour), or fish for trout on the Jaur at the medieval Devil’s Bridge (40 minutes). Take family rambles along the Passa Païs greenway from Bédarieux (15 minutes) or clamber up Mont Caroux (40 minutes) for views across undulating peaks of the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park. Also in the park is Olargues (20 minutes), considered one of the prettiest villages in France; visit to explore the medieval castle ruins and peer into the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions. While you’re exploring hereabouts, watch for the elusive mouflon, horned wild sheep reintroduced from Corsica.
