Peace, calm and spectacular views are what you’ll get with a stay at Le Mas de Riri, a hillside campsite in the department of Hérault. Overlooking Lake Salagou and surrounded by forested hills rising steeply out of the water, this place has a secret… for Le Mas de Riri also looks over the village of Celles, abandoned when the reservoir was created in the 1960s. As well as that unusual backdrop, the campsite has masses of amenities to ensure family camping holidays go smoothly: included here are a play area, spotless shower blocks with baby rooms, washing-up sinks and facilities for the mobility impaired. If you’re fretting about food, there’s no need, as fresh bread and pastries are delivered every morning (you can order in advance), and barbecues are allowed – buy your supplies from the small shop in the hamlet of Le Bosc (10 minutes’ drive) or head for Clermont-l’Hérault (20 minutes) for more serious stocking up. However, if you succumb to the laidback vibe of the place and take cooking off the agenda, simply head to the terraced restaurant for good local dishes and more of those fabulous views to the lake and Celles. Dogs are welcome on site; you can exercise them with a stroll down to Celles and let them cool off in the water along the lake’s shoreline.

Liked Beautiful views of lake and hills. Very peaceful. Great bar and restaurant on site- very popular eatery for locals. Good prices for their tapas offerings- potato dippers and tempura prawns were great. Kayaking on the lake was peaceful. Take your wallet as a great bar to the left- a bit of a paddle away but worth it. One also to the right , but that was closed. Lake is great to swim in. Toilets and showers were clean.Staff were friendly. Bar was well priced. If you are going to be sans car, stock up before parking up, as nothing in walking distance. Or, eat and drink on site for the duration. A place at one with nature. Herons easily spotted. Very beautiful. Worth a visit.

Disliked Lack of electrical points. We had to hire a much longer lead to add on to our already substantial one. €30 deposit. Didn't spoil our stay, but caused some panic at the start as we thought we might be without electric for four days and with the heat, we needed the fans on! Take three and two pinned extensions- just incase.

Er ist einfach, aber schön!
Das Lokal ist sehr schön.

Disliked Die Sanitäranlagen sind nicht so toll. Kein Toilettenpapier.

Liked Great views of the lake and an area where you can get in and swim.
Good walks around the lake in both directions, or you can do as I did and do the full loop - be warned, this is a long walk c. 15 miles and, ironically, no access to drinking water or any facilities so make sure you're prepared.

Disliked I want to caveat my dislikes by saying the site didn't suit me but may well be perfect for others. This is more to make others aware to make an informed choice.
The pitches are dirt pitches rather than grass, hard to get pegs into.
There were a lot of ants. I learnt very quickly not to drop any food (even crumbs) near my van.
It's quite a busy site (clearly popular).

Also, be aware, when you book through Pitch-Up you then have to send an email, otherwise your booking isn't confirmed.

Disliked Ik stond n beetje op n verkeerde plek. De caravan ving heel veel wind. Volgende x op n andere plek maar komen zeker terug

Liked Lovely location with view of the lake. Fresh bread on a morning (van turns up beeping horn so you know it's arrived)
Lovely restaurant over looking the lake and nice meal too.
Would recommend taking boat,kayak or paddle board also fishing rods but great for a swin too.
Rough terrain as it's on a hill side.
Facilities clean, staff friendly.
Free WiFi in bar area.

Disliked Nothing, other than wife left her purse in bar area and someone pinched it.

Liked The view, the service, the refreshing lake, the French culture and offcourse the restaurant.

Disliked The first place we had (58) was very small but could move to the spot next to it.
And the freezer (for the cooling elements) did not work during the entire stay. We could get some ice from the bar but that wasn’t enough.

Local attractions

Lake Salagou is watersports central – within five minutes’ walk from the pitches, you can be out on the reservoir sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and swimming. Back on dry land, hiking trails lead into the rugged Mourèze foothills, which you can also explore on horseback (15 minutes’ drive) or mountain bike. You can knock a tennis ball about (15 minutes) or up the thrill factor by abseiling and canyoning in Gorges de la Vis (45 minutes). Or how about trying something new and zipwiring past limestone formations deep underground in Clamouse Cave (25 minutes)? For slower-paced days out, tour the prayer halls, stupas and bronze statuary at Lerab Ling Buddhist Temple (half an hour, summer only), or drop in on the crumbling hillside Château de Lauzieres (10 minutes, now being slowly renovated) for an evening concert. The exceptional Lodève Museum (15 minutes) showcases archeological finds dating from prehistoric times right through to contemporary sculptures and paintings.
