  • Spacious family-friendly site on the banks of the Hérault river
  • 45 minutes' drive from Montpellier and the Mediterranean coast
  • Busy programme of activities for kids, teens and adults in summer
A gentle warning to indecisive types: it can be tricky to settle on what to do first on your days spent at Camping Le Val d’Hérault. A dip in the pool maybe, or a trip to the river beach to have your swim au naturel? A game of pétanque, table tennis or volleyball? Perhaps the kids fancy the playground? Ooh, and it’d be worth checking out the daily activity programme to see what kinds of antics are lined up for the day: fitness classes, sports tournaments, massages and all sorts of fun stuff for the kids and teens. Bearing in mind, of course, that you might want to save a bit of energy for the evening ents of karaoke, dancing or themed party nights. And that’s before you’ve even considered the possibility of heading out on a canoe trip (organised by the site with a partner firm), taking a hike in the Cévennes National Park, looking around local caves or heading south to the beaches of the Med coast. Only one thing for it then: best be telling the boss you’ll be off for a bit, and book yourself as much time as you can spare to fit all this in to your schedule. Handily, finding time for life’s essentials is a cinch here, with a launderette, wifi connection and food shop on site, along with a bar-restaurant and pizzeria for those days when you simply can’t fit shopping and cooking into your day (any excuse, eh?)

Electric optional gravel and earth pitch

Liked: Very quiet side in nice country side.

Disliked: It's in the middle of know where. Booked for two nights as stop over through France as it had a nice pool. Went to use it and told it will be open at 2pm. Totally unhelpful service. Toilets average site needs some TLC. Would not stay again. Had to pay for wifi which was good.

From the manager: yes, the campsite is in the Cévennes, maybe looking at its location would have been a good idea. We took a morning to put a mandatory product in the pool, it's not open every day at 2pm

Electric optional gravel and earth pitch

Liked: Very nice, stunning location. River side beach. We could choose our pitch when we arrived . Very helpful receptionist . Very nice pool with enough sunbeds and never too busy ( there were few bees around the entrance always so if you are allergic you should be aware). There is a small playground but not huge ( our son is 4 years old and he was happy playing with bugs , swimming in the pool and in the river so we didn't really need it). We asked for two extra chairs and we got some . Also hired a fridge from them which was fine ( don't forget the fridge comes with EU plug)

Disliked: We had a bit of a misunderstanding around the final payment but in the end we went back to reception and got our money back as we should. Just make sure you know how much you should pay and double check it. Also French people are not really keen on speaking English so don't expect them to do so ( it is not the camping site, it is in general).

Electric optional gravel and earth pitch

Local attractions

If you like a walk, you’re in a good place here – there’s much rambling to be done in the Cévennes National Park, 20 minutes away, including climbing to the Mount Aigoual observatory or a more gentle hike along the path Robert Louis Stevenson followed in ‘Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes’ (and you can indeed hire a donkey for true historical reconstruction if you wish). Away from the park, you may fancy a hike around the rock formations Cirque de Navacelles or Cirque de Mourèze, both within an hour’s drive, or signing up for a canoe trip into the Gorges de l’Hérault. Golf, watersports and treetop climbing courses can all be found nearby as well. This area is particularly famed for its caves, so make time to go underground at Grottes des Demoiselles or Cave of Clamouse – neither is more than half an hour’s drive away.
